Trying to dig the pony

Unread post by Sector11 » Tue Oct 29, 2013 11:13 pm

Well, I'm getting ready to admit I don't have what it takes to be here.

I installed Pony ... had to edit /etc/default/keyboard as the install process didn't do it right ... that I've got use to, does it . Got that working in the GUI environment - but I still have that damn US keyboard layout at X

Then I configured ceni ... well I though I had. This is Pony:
[deleted] -- mac address :(

This is Debian SID:
[deleted] -- mac address :(
They are identical! :( But no net with Pony!

Then comes: battery? what friggin' battery! :)

hey there S11. for the battstat in the prompt, that was just a little project for me. If on a desktop instead of laptop, simply edit the .bashrc and get rid of the battstat syntax. You'll see it.

for you net issue, after you configured ceni, did you run

Code: Select all

sudo ifup eth0

Work hard; Complain less

sudo ifup eth0 - OH CRAP!!!! Totally forgot that! I know I have a txt file here someplace that mentions that ... I think.

Maybe an update: http://linuxbbq.org/wiki/index.php?title=Ceni ??

Sorry Sector but this is the section for noobs. ;) :P

Edit: How did you change the keyboard layout? With:

Code: Select all

dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
What about this:

Code: Select all

setxkbmap <language_code>

Found John's post, maybe his solution can help you:

Code: Select all

dpkg-reconfigure console-data
Edit: I see, you say you have US in X, then really:

Code: Select all

setxkbmap <your layout>
should get you going.

Did you edit this?

The first one works well, however I simply copy: etc.default.keyboard.txt over to: etc/default/keyboard - been doing that for a while now.

this:

Code: Select all

setxkbmap <language_code>

OH good I thought was going mad ... well I am but that's beside the point.

At X I tried:

Code: Select all

sudo setxkbmap latam
I got:
Cannot open display "default display"
Ok so I tested my keyboard - nope. My ñ key came out as ; Grrrrrrrrr no 'latam'

So I logged in ---
in a terminal

Code: Select all

sudo setxkbmap latam
gave no such error ... rebooted: ñ = ; Grrrrr!!!

I'll get it!

for keyboard, I did this before and it worked. Keeping in mind I am US, but the framework is there

Code: Select all

setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us -variant ,dvorak -option grp:alt_shift_toggle
for network, maybe since ceni brings it up, we need to

Code: Select all

sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0
if no luck, maybe try

Code: Select all

sudo dhclient eth0

Are you sure about latam? I know you are in Argentina but I use es and it works here with our beloved ñ. But I would maybe use es-AR for Argentina, so that you Latinos do not kill me. :) Or I have to dig deeper with those codes because I switch keyboards multiple times through all my languages.

Check it out: /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst

Been using it since 2000 with W2K and since 2009 with Linux

This keyboard:
line 118 wrote:microsoftpro Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro / Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro
Image
line 227 wrote: latam Spanish (Latin American)
/etc/default/keyboard

Code: Select all

# KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE

# Consult the keyboard(5) manual page.

XKBMODEL="microsoftpro"
XKBLAYOUT="latam"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS=""

BACKSPACE="guess"
My keyboard is an "old" one for "Latin America" and has Spanish and Portuguese symbols (Brazil). However Argentina has stopped using it and started using the Spanish "es" board while I 'believe' Brazil still uses the "br" - Portuguese (Brazil) keyboard.

This keyboard weighs a ton, is solid and I remove the keys every couple of years and clean it as best I can.
Where Spanish keyboards have º to the left of the "1" key I have the pure degree symbol: °

I get the º with: [Alt Gr] + [Shift] + m But no one uses Nº for number anymore, I'm OLD! --» Nº 3 is E=MC²

This is what my keyboard does:

Code: Select all

    N

W ←·→ E  They went that way!

    S

Hold on a moment. What is "logged out of Openbox to X"? You mean ito TTY? There you won't be able to run setXkbmap because you are not in X.
This command, with or without sudo, can be added to .config/openbox/autostart
After installation, "waitress" usually starts up and even asks for this, and does it for you.

After entering the "setxkbmap COUNTRY_CODE" command, it is active. No need to switch in and out or log out and reboot or so.

The network is set up with Ceni. Start Ceni in temrinal, remove the previous configuration (there is a menu entry for it), and start over again.

3rd last option on OB Menu - "EXIT OPENBOX" I thopught that was X - OK TTY

I tried it as root:root - no as sector11:password: no

I logged in --- I tried it in a terminal: no go - without 'sudo' I get:

Code: Select all

bash: setxkbmanp: command not found
gotta run, back later.

Yes, "Waitress" started and yes I set it to 'latam' - it works fine in the GUI environment - not at TTY I still have the default (US ??) keyboard there.

I run ceni here in Debian SID - works fine, I ran ceni on Pony - same settings exactly it reports the same line as SID:

Code: Select all

eth0 ethernet [mac address identical] forceth NVIDIA MCP61
Just tried again a few moments ago - no net, no latam keyboard at TTY.

eth0 ethernet [mac address identical] forceth NVIDIA MCP61
does this mean your router hasn't 'forgotten' the DHCP lease - It normally realises and assigns the same IP again.

quick n00b straightner;
X = GUI/X-server
TTY(1,2,3,etc) = Text user Interface/CLI known thusly known as *no-X, console or Framebuffer.* basically no GUI.
you'll need to understand the difference between them.

so setXkbmanp won't do anything to the TTY. (although looks like you mistyped it, but it still wouldn't do anything)

in tty, you'll wanna try

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-data
you'll get a bunch of questions related to your layout.
1 - select from ARCH list (nothing to do with arch linux)
2 - qwerty?
3 - you will see lat-american there
4 - profit.

I think - yes Ivan definitely posted this same snippet from johnraff.

oh and re; ping
try ping 8.8.8.8
if that works your DNS isn't working.
add that same chinese lucky number into ceni.
second page DNS namesservers, maybe DNS gateway as well.
