WMChooser, how to edit, plus no-X?

Unread post by Potatohead » Tue Nov 19, 2013 3:15 pm

Hi, where do I find instructions on how to change the Windowmanagerchooser? I want to add / delete options. Like: choosing between OpenBox, bspwm and i3wm.

Second question: if the wmchooser starts, this is still without X, right? Is it possible to set the chooser up in such a way that you have a "no X" option?
- Either right from the start (use case: you log on for some terminal based work. In the menu, you choose the no X-option)
- Or after working in, say OpenBox (use case: you want to kill the X server before doing dist-upgrade).

Thanks.

Hi,
just briefly:
sudo nano /usr/bin/wmchooser

For a no-X you either go to tty2/3/4/5 (ctrl-alt-f2/3/4/5) or add a tmux entry. Should work with a simple 'bash' entry, too - no guarantee though.
Reason: a simple "exit" from wmchooser will restart the login.

For dist-upgrades, change to tty2/3/4/5 and enter: sudo pkill X
then dist-upgrade in tty2/3/4/5

Hold on, the choosewm package is not the wmchooser (later is BBQ only).

It's a quite self-explaining file, a wrapper around a simply bash menu. Simply remove/change the entries in /usr/bin/wmchooser - it's really not a big deal, but if you get stuck I will fix it for you ;)
