Gimp on n00b

Forum rules
We don't support installations in VirtualBox, VMWare, qemu or others. We ignore posts about WINE, PlayOnLinux, Steam and Skype. We don't support btrfs, lvm, UEFI, side-by-side installations with GPT or dualboot with anything newer than Windows XP.
Google your problem first. Check the Wiki. Read the existing threads. It's okay to "hijack" an existing thread, yes! If your problem is not yet covered, open a new thread. To get the quickest possible help, mention the exact release codename in your post (uname -a is a good idea, too). Due to the lack of crystal balls, attach the output of lspci -nnk if you encounter hardware problems.

Gimp on n00b

Gimp was working fine for me after install of n00b.
After a recent update it is not starting.
You see the Gimp window start up for a fraction of a second and then it disappears.

I have tried a reinstall of Gimp - same problem.
I have tried a delete of ~/.gimp-2.8 followed by a reinstall - same problem.

Could this be a Sid issue at the moment.
Anybody else having this problem after an upgrade?

Any tips on a solution would be most welcome.
Not a show stopper but I do fire up Gimpy from time to time...

Not a sid isue.
gimp starts fine on my system, which is up-to-date sid.
Connected. Take this REPL, brother, and may it serve you well.

Works fine here too.
Just shooting in the dark, try doing fc-cache -vf, it seems to be complaining about font cache...

I guess it's libpango making troubles here. Can you --purge gimp, then run orphaner, select all (also libjpeg62) and --reinstall --yes-install-recommends gimp?

I am about to try your suggestions and I will update this post.
I have just found that if I choose gtk-2.0 theme Nodoka (any of them) Gimp starts just fine...

I tried your procedure - no change.
Gimp will not start with any gtk-3.0 theme...(default theme list in n00b)

Orphaner showed these packages;

That's typical for sid, check the #! forums for around 1000 posts related to broken/incompatible gtk-3.8 (!) themes. That's the reason we try to prevent this dependency - the Numix is actually 3.8 compatible, or you can check the phenix (whatever its name is) theme, I think clearlooks-phenix - it is the only one I know of that works from the repos. Else: simply get rid of gtk-3-0 in sid. It's a PITA.

but isn't the gimp still gtk2? how does the gtk3 part of a theme affect it?
If I try to use a gtk 3.6 theme, only the gtk3 programs stop launching, everything else works fine.
