Elementary OS rant

Unread post by ivanovnegro » Tue Feb 18, 2014 8:42 pm

It still looks like Gnome 2 with a dock. I have really no idea why they bother in producing it.

I installed it too a few weeks ago, and raged through the whole 1 hour of keeping it. All this "new and shiny desktop" crap is going backwards. How is it that my PC could handle a full blown Compiz Fusion + Gnome 2 desktop easily (with half as much RAM as it has now, as a side note), but this is crazy slow? And I disabled every freaking unneeded service there was. There is no added functionality, only added animations, plus everybody is going crazy about how good it looks, but, again, they should search for some god dang Gnome 2 screenshots.

It's totally bloated before even open a terminal, but I don't plan to use it. I just wanted to see how come many are so happy with it.

I've often wonder that about certain distros and window managers.

Then how do you know when someone is running appple? they will tell you.

Thanks for sharing.

I tried it, too. Dumbed-down way too much, even more so than Mac OSX. Linux for the GUI simpletons, I guess.

I must be a minority here. I actually love it.
There isn't much difference between it and other WM at first glance.
The thing that sets it apart is the workspace switcher.
For me, that's integral. I can run vmware, full sreen, dual head and still swap workpaces.
Dual head/vmware is problematic for OpenBox (it completely stretches across the screen)
Dual head works well on XFCE, except the workspace switching (I did just stumble across skippy-xd that does flip)
Gnome3 not sure about the switching.
KDE will switch, full screen dual head.
As far as bloat, it works fine on my Acer Aspire (kinda load-end quad core with ATI)

I saw the workspace switcher. To be honest, it's quicker and lighter with dwm and ratpoison, so that sure isn't the top feature for me. Also, if you install elementary-tweaks and the slim panel, the workspace switcher doesn't work cause of a bug. And for those who needs iBus like me, there's a bug in that bloated menu when ibus is active and you want to use the search field. Even if I had to ignore the bloat, I can't find any reason at all to use this OS.

^The key was fullscreen vmware.
Most other WM ignore hot spots (and keys) when vmware is running fullscreen.

I liked it too, Hinto.

On consideration, I narrowed it down to two things.

* Plank
* Slingshot

.... both of which helped me do shit milliseconds faster (those milliseconds really count, right?).

Everything else was fairly irrelevant, and in cases where they 'elementary-ized' apps, bloody irritating.

I am now using Makulu and Arrogance; both with XFCE, Plank and WhiskerMenu and getting the same overall 'feel'.

^skippy-xd will give you expose'
You'll probably want to build skippy-xd from git hub. It fixes a few bugs.

This is funny because I actually run elementary OS on my laptop. My only reason for doing so is for college because it I don't have to configure a thing. I do prefer my BBQ desktop over that lap top any day of the week though.

I was just thinking about that. I was actually just writing a program for school on my laptop and got tired of switching through windows on a gnome so I just put it on my desktop. Working on it is so much easier xD
