I do support for an interactive developer environment (IDE), and so the tech support questions I get are from programmers. I have, on more than one occasion, had a user email me a copied-and-pasted error message. But actually it contained instructions on what to do if they received this particular message. It didn't occur to him to read the text he was copying.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Re: Have you tried turning it off and on again?
resurrect!
This had me giggling in an over coffee'd end of the day way:
user asks for opening the FW for his IP to connect to MYSQL - fine, we make sure he is who he says he is, by getting to reply.
He replies with 'can't you grep the logs for my IP (same as he'd asked for) connecting successfully... Yeah fair point I thought, so I grepped <ip> /var/log/auth.log:
Mar 27 12:01:12 <machine> sshd[15990]: reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for 99-99-999-999.static.ukisp.net [999.999.99.99] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT!
Yeah, nice one...that'll work O-o

Re: Have you tried turning it off and on again?
yeah sorry, indeed WP = wordpress, after typing it ten million times using "WP" becomes bearable. :)
Forgot the moral of the post: think as many steps ahead as you can, and where Mac users are concerned make sure to thing like an 8 year old.
I tell you, my wife walked in whilst I was doing the silent scream, I said, look these guys want to REMOTELY login to their WP install, what do you think Localhost might mean?
Yup "umm, their local computer?"
she got it in one...and she's not super technical at all.
anyway my fault for not thinking ahead on this one.

^ I can sense your pain. It's been a while since my latest encounter with Outlook. Hated every single minute with it.
Re: Have you tried turning it off and on again?
fucking Outlook. what i hated especially was when the mailserver was Outlook Express or some shit (forget whether that was the name) and it seemed to be just completely fucking impossible to get anything except their own software to work with it. fuck that shit.

^ Exchange - I think, don't get me started on that, apparently it's good for troubleshooting in the admin side.
I know when customers migrate to the new 360 (365?) because of a page of tiresome DNS entries arrives.

Exchange, yesss, that fucker. i'm sure it is good for troubleshooting, as it is set up in such a way that it only works in 1 manner and no other.

Re: Have you tried turning it off and on again?
So WP (wordpress) updates by FTP, this is annoying as we hate FTP, so we use SFTP (FTP using SSH port and auth, easy peasy and secure.
this means WP doesn't just update over FTP because, well it's not running.
The choices are;
* install a plugin to use SSH annoying on a lot of wp installs.
* add all the PHP packages to allow that, which is global but annoying.
* just install FTP and lock it down to IPs. Seem simple right?

Re: Have you tried turning it off and on again?
So that last one might have been a bit technical.
Here's how to write a support ticket:
1) google the problem.
2) c/p the answer
3) write whatever the hell you like, treat it as if you were talking to a forumite.
4) check it out on the server.
5) get a little confused.
6) confuse colleagues
7) notice that everything is actually alright
8) delete what you wrote
9) notice a different problem
10) write about that, then remove all opinion - just the facts ma'am
11) send it off.
12) realise that it was the wrong email and not CC'ed to anyone useful.
13) have lunch
