Re: Mechanical keyboard?
I thought it was about time that I uploaded my collection of boards.
The first keyboard is a Leopold 210TP with Cherry MX blues and PBT key caps. This is a nice number pad that I keep on the left of my keyboard (as the last photo shows).
The second keyboard is a KBT Pure Pro with PBT keys, detachable cable, orange backlighting and Cherry MX Blues. I got this board from a massdrop as I wanted a 60% board with blues.
The final board is a Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja with brown switches. The grey keycaps are PBTs that I got imported from America. The ESC key is a lasered metal key from my favourite computer store and the cable is a hand made detachable mini-usb cable.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
Cheers guys!
The KBT doesn't get as much use as it deserves, it is a weird layout and a little too noisey for those late night grilling sessions. :(

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
you guys, came across this, thought you might be interested, sure sounds up your alley: http://www.qwerkywriter.com/
Shipping in summer 2015, Qwerkywriter is a $300 computer keyboard that uses mechanisms that mimic the keys of an old-fashioned manual, mechanical keyboard.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
I just picked up the Daskeyboard Ultimate S (the one without the letters on the keys), and I just love this thing. I thought I might have some trouble at first figuring out which keys are which, but after a couple weeks, I'm used to it.
Of course, I got the clicky one. I don't remember which switches those are - blue? - but it's not as loud as I was afraid it would be.
I wouldn't trade this thing for the world.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
^ Is it the one with the volume knob?
I love 60% boards like this: http://imgur.com/a/c1wEQ
Without the backlighting. I consider it pretty useless, since I don't look at the keyboard.
The one in the background of the first photo is also nice. I'd take pretty much anything without a numeric keypad though :P
BTW, has anyone (harvey?) tried buying from Massdrop? Any experiences?

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
I personally like it even better. MX Greens feel the most clicky, which is exactly what I am looking for! Backlight doesn't matter to me as much as I find that I don't even look at the keyboard most of the time. Dat cost tho... I would actually rather just get a Unicomp Ultra Classic in White for $80 and have a buckling spring ;Dkexolino wrote:The one in the background of the first photo is also nice.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
I've had a Happy Hacker Keyboard for the last 10 years. It comes in a sane configuration (fuck caps lock)

edit: not a mechanical keyboard, but fuck it.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
^ I understand the no caps lock thing but why would you ever move control from the bottom left corner? D: I dislike it when companies put FN on the far left rather than control.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
I know dat feel. It took me about a week to get used to it on my T410; now I have an even harder time with normal keyboards :Delixir wrote:I dislike it when companies put FN on the far left rather than control.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
@kex No, the Ultimate-S is the model that came before that one. I don't need all the stuff on the newer keyboard, and there were some reviews that implied that build quality on the newer models had slipped a little.
Re: Mechanical keyboard?
When a certain editor (emacs) uses control for half of its commands, the placement of the control key makes a lot of sense all of a sudden.elixir wrote:^ I understand the no caps lock thing but why would you ever move control from the bottom left corner? Re: Mechanical keyboard?
So I'm continuing to clear through old hardware here at work, and I come across a keyboard that's noticeably heavier than all the others I have lying around. "Hmm, this seems like a right solid piece of hardware," I say to myself. I tap at the keys, seems mechanical, nice feel. I look on the back, it says it's a BCT Professional Keyboard Series, Model 5339-R. So I look it up, and here's what I find:

It seems I found a classic mechanical keyboard!

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
After trying out my co-worker's CM Storm QuickFire Rapid Tenkeyless Mechanical Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches (whew, that was a mouthful), I decided to pick one up. Should arrive in a couple of days.
So now the new system is almost complete: 4GB of RAM and a black Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse arrived today, got a 19" Lenovo monitor ($15, also from ebay) to go with the Lenovo box, and the keyboard is coming.

Re: Mechanical keyboard?
From Unicomp.com
Brilliancies:
1. [CapsLock] in the corner where dunces belong and [Ctrl] nice and accessible, the two being swapped.
2. [Esc] nice and accessible for Vim/Vimium, having been swapped with the Tilde key by design/default.
3. Both [Alt] keys and the right [Ctrl] key are raised slightly higher than the "Windows" and "Menu/Dialog" keys.
4. Trackball on the keyboard, oriented for a few different ways to hold onto it? Yes please, ESPECIALLY with focus-follows-mouse in i3.
5. Buckling spring - better than Cherry Red in my opinion, but not quite the feel of my favorite Cherry Black feel.
Drawbacks:
1. Windows logos printed on two keys, which I've since had to cover up with Jolly Roger stickers.
2. Related to the first drawback, all square keys are literally keycaps, being a shell that goes over the key... so no standard keycap flair replacements.
