Re: Coffee Thread
OK, I'm reviving an old thread here ... but damn it this is coffee ... it shouldn't be allowed to die ...
I've tried all kinds of coffee over the years ...
@ bones - Screw that Starbucks stuff!
- OH YEA! Can't argue that.
@dkeg - Did I mention I used to manage coffee shops for close to ten years.
- Nooooo! {sigh} Suppose you went home and drank tea ... :D
I do either French press with "fine grind", to hell with grinds in my coffee - chew through em or a drip if lazy..
The coffee is nothing special, just out of the grocery store, I can't find any "imported" coffee here but I always pick "Intenso" (intense - makes sense). I do have my little hand grinder that I still like to use on occasion.
Coffee has been cut back in the past few years for the Argentinian "mate" though. Although I did train my wife - we now add ground coffee to it. :D

Re: Coffee Thread
I hope that was a joke :p if only for the weird colour that must turn, still the Argys put all sort of other stuff with it.Sector11 wrote:Coffee has been cut back in the past few years for the Argentinian "mate" though. Although I did train my wife - we now add ground coffee to it. :D
You might find the Tearoom thread interesting too.

Re: Coffee Thread
:) All that I have comes directly from Bosnia. But some coffees are available in Germany, especially from Serbia like Grand Kafa/Minas Red. But only in Balkan/Turkish/Arabic shops in bigger cities. In Stuttgart e.g. you can find whatever you want, it is the biggest Serbian city in Germany.machinebacon wrote:ivan, is this stuff available in Germany? If yes, can you tell me the source? :)

Re: Coffee Thread
@ Ivan - How are you? Loooooooooong time.
- I'd love to order stuff like that but it would never pass customs here. :(
@ wuxmedia - No, no joke, it's only, maybe, a level teaspoon full. Colour doesn't change at all. Now her whole family does it - but my MIL uses {grabbing barf-bucket} instant coffee!
{**C*H*U*C*K**}
Tearoom ... hmmmm any talk of Chinese Tea ... when it cools off here, I have to go to the local China Town and get some.
{never mind ... just read the first few posts} Yup, I'll be there ... :D

Re: Coffee Thread
@dd: thanks for the info and website, now I just gotta find a good Balkan supermarket there (I'm not native in Stuttgart, but google knows all). Those days the Turks had Vegeta and other Eastern Bloc things, too, maybe I'm lucky.

Re: Coffee Thread
as mentioned in the other thread, picked up a used (barely) espresso machine for 15 USD. Works great!

Re: Coffee Thread
I just picked up a can of Cafe Bustelo at Safeway for $5 on clearance and I have to admit, it's actually pretty good. I go through about a pot of coffee a day by myself and Stumptown was getting pricey that way, so I am happy to find something that I also liked :D
Since it is Cuban, it is apparently made to be drank sweet so I added a teaspoon of coconut sugar and threw some nutmeg and cinnamon in the coffee grounds. I'm liking it 8)

Re: Coffee Thread
I found two articles that I really enjoyed reading. They are about how to roast coffee beans at home using either an oven or a popcorn maker.
https://ineedcoffee.com/roasting-coffee ... rn-popper/
https://ineedcoffee.com/home-roasting-c ... n-an-oven/
The idea is actually great, and if you drink quite a lot of coffee you can save quite a lot of money - green beans cost around half of roasted beans, or even less. You can store these green beans for months or years, and you can create your own blends. Nice.

Re: Coffee Thread
Actually exactly what my father did. Roasting coffee at home in an oven was very typical in Bosnia. Maybe still is.machinebacon wrote:I found two articles that I really enjoyed reading. They are about how to roast coffee beans at home using either an oven or a popcorn maker.

Re: Coffee Thread
Recently I am using a coffee press (convenience!) instead of the espresso maker - really nice and quick, and a more mellow taste. Anybody else here using the french press? Got some tips and tricks? :)

Re: Coffee Thread
French press, a bodum style thing?
obvious tip: not too much coffee, overwise the coffee plugs the plunger and pisses it all over the place on pushing down.
If I want it strong and have time, I put the coffee in and pour a bit less than needed 'off the boil' water in, let it sit for a bit then pour boiling water in.
This displaces the grinds (grounds?) and makes some sink, then go for the plunge.
if you are stuck somewhere with ground coffee and a kettle, no press or anything, the same technique can be used with a jug or even a cup at a push.
I think that is the reason for the old stylee coffee pots, being thinner at the top or something
oh yes, works better with a coarser grind, that fine grind tends to exacerbate the plug problem, although one can get in with a spoon and stir that around as well as the hot water on top trick.
