Font problem on forums

gutterslob wrote: P.S Am I the only one getting weird rendering with this new typewriter font? With words that end with st, for example? Or is it some encoding issue on my side?

Here's a scrot;

No funny rendering here, the font comes from Google Fonts (Inconsolata, IIRC) and falls back to Monospace (IIRC). And IIRC I changed it to Inconsolata those days because of you (the zero was not dotted before, using Droid Mono IIRC)

Can you go to the User Control Panel (top right corner) -> Board Preferences -> My Board Style -> "Just_enjoy"

If the fonts are still rendered that way (they are different in the other theme), it must be an encoding issue.

^ Font rendering in "Just_enjoy" is fine, but the theme is a bit too much eye-rape for my dark dungeon.

Oh, and I approve of the typewriter font style. Just the current rendering (on my side) that's a bit funky at the moment. Will look into it later. Probably something really obvious that I missed somewhere, or possibly a browser (currently firefox)thing.

No worries.

This is what it looks like in Iceweasel:

Maybe something to do with pango? Can you override the font selection via Firefox preferences? Don't know if it works on per-site basis.

Of course it would be good to know what causes this issue. Does it happen in all font sizes on this page?

Or did you change the font size (percentage) in FF?

probably not helping, but forum CSS shows this:

Code: Select all

font-family: 'Share Tech Mono', 'Monospace',  sans-serif;
Couldn't see a call to google for it though, not sure where the CSS for it might be.

main page CSS calls google for Inconsalata.
PS looks fine here with chrome, and a bunch of random fonts installed.

On closer inspection looks like you've got a Typographical Ligature in there Gslob... a la - st
which is a bit weird...

Hmm, can of worms time:

That might be the problem. Can you - if you have time - simply change the Share Tech Mono to Inconsolata (or add it to the array)? Thank you!

^ Those changes have been actioned.. ;)

but I don't think there is a call to google for it, that font is never loaded.
I think it's the auto ligature feature on FF/IW on fonts less than 20px i the nest if links I posted above.

Ok, I use just-enjoy for a while now because honestly, the default theme looks horrible fonts wise. They are too small, regardless the browser and they are not readable even if you configure minimal font size in the browser they are still too tiny. Before we used another font, I am not sure and it was perfect. Sorry for bothering. For a long time I did not even mention it. I just switched to the lighter theme months ago that use "normal" fonts without a complain. ;) But as we brought it here my inner font perfectionism got out.

Of course, minimal font size, at least 12 will help Gutterslob.

Edit: You can also force own fonts but then WordPress complains here.

Thing is, it was fine up until two visits (about a week) ago. Before this, it looked like the same font used in MB's screenshot. This only affects my Debian/BBQ install, btw. Things are perfectly readable on Safari (iPhone and OS X), Chrome in Android, and xombrero* in OpenBSD. It's only this install that the forum fonts get weird. At least it's still semi-readable on FF. On most of the the Webkit browsers on Linux it's just plain incomprehensible.

* I suppose xombrero doesn't count since I've overridden default site fonts in the .conf

Either way, it's not a big deal. Don't break your head over it. I won't go creating a BBQ-Fonts/He-Man meme on 4chan out of spite or anything like that. Rest easy.

^ the CSS (and pretty much everything else) has been static since the migration, until I made those changes this morning.

I just wonder why it looks good for some, and bad for some. And weirdly enough, for me here it looks equally good on Chromium, Chrome, Iceweasel. If I turn off VPN, too. OTOH if I turn off VPN and go to #!, the fonts dont get loaded from their Google API link and I get butt-ugly Verdana or so.

Really though, only gutterslob could have a typographical ligature issue 8)
I don't think the google fonts *are* loaded, I can't see a call to them.
Looks great for me.

To be honest I too have problems with font rendering using subsilver theme. I switched to justenjoy few weeks ago, and didn't bother to ask for explanations because I blamed surf for that. Surf can't render some fonts properly, don't know why, but I'm fine with that.

Little update on pango: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=612464

Those who are affected by shitty fonts - does it happen on Intel gfx chips?

^ oh yes

Code: Select all

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)
Also, I got Infinality patch set using the Ivan's guide and, surf aside, fonts looks awesome.
