have to be careful of the updates, don't leave on auto unless you want the map to suddenly be out of date.

Do you know of a good (and FOSS) Wifi2Phone or Messenger app, something like a Skype alternative? Line/Viber are OK but I don't trust the companies behind them. Seems it's really hard to find a XMPP messenger that is not bloated with smilies and emoticons and ads.

Oh boy. You and I are basically in the same boat. Almost every frickin person I know keeps pestering me to get one of those instant messenger things. This was made worse a few months ago when my mum discovered WhatsApp and Viber (thanks to my idiot sister). Grrr.

I don't know. Skype is owned my MS, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, Viber is owned by Rakuten, and Hangouts is made by Google. All of them make money off your info in some way (which is why I took the recent WhatsApp encryption announcement with a heavy pinch of salt) or another. If anything, I'd say Rakuten are the least "evil" of the four corporations, but they're still related to ISPs and other mobile endeavors (plus Viber was invented by the Israelis, and as you know, every Israeli is a closet Mossad agent whether they realize it or not) , so maybe they're just better at being sneaky than the others. WhatsApp did donate to FreeBSD (hello Apple, still waiting for your donation) recently so that's at least one plus for using them, but I'm pretty certain Facebook won't allow complete privacy. There's also the fact that all these blasted apps run in the background and need access to your contacts/phonebook to work. At least on iOS you can deny them access to location services and notifications, but they'll still find a way to annoy you with "promotions" via messaging on both iOS and Android.

For alternatives, there's Bleep (Android only for now) which I linked to in a previous post on this thread. Also Sicher, which supposedly offers secure messaging and VoIP calling. Then there's Rebtel, which is Swede, and they supposedly have great privacy laws in Scandinavia (though the Bjorns still bent over for the Yanks to arrest the Pirate Bay guys). There's also Telegram which supposedly has a bunch of math PhDs rolling their own encryption, and they even offer cash to anyone who breaks it, but there are arguments that the challenge is rigged so that they'll never lose - here's a blog posting about Telegram's security and a bunch of bickering in the comments section between the blogger and Telegram's rep. Judge for yourself.

Basically, if you google search "is [name of app] safe/secure" you'll get a bunch of arguments about each one. Those that don't have any arguments against them are usually way off the radar, so it's almost certain that none of the people you plan to contact will even bother installing the app in the first place.

TL;DR - if you find one, let me know =P
I know there HAS to be at least one out there that does what we want. Just haven't discovered it yet. I'm tempted by Sicher - have it on my App Store wishlist - but am still unsure about it all.

Oh, if you manage to find a messenger that Google has banned from their Play Store, chances are it's very good with securing your privacy. Here's why, though not related to messaging.

I have also been presurred to use WhatsApp and other honeypot apps by annoying family members. At this time I am just looking for the "least insecure" messaging platform... and Rebtel looks quite nice actually. Cheers!

Thank you slobby! I have even tried Telegram but there's nobody yet to test and try it with. For me, a perfect solution would be a mix of messenger and VoIP -- I am a long-year user of SkypeOut, you know (probably) how hard it is to get a call out of China without paying 3.6 RMB per minute. Unfortunately the call quality got worse and worse, so I changed to a Chinese VoIP service which is quite OK, but it is connected to a mobile phone number, and I'd like to call using my home WiFi. A 'voice messenger' like WhatsApp or Wechat would be fine, too. Of course I already use Wechat (which I hate with a passion), as it is the official replacement for QQ ;) I hesitate to recommend it to my family (that's the reason I am actually looking for such an app).

^ Not available as in not available in the Chinese Play/App Store? Or did you install the app and it said the service wasn't available?

I used different VPNs (Japanese, US, Hong Kong) through the Google Play store, and the store says it is not available in my country. Anyway it would require an SMS activation, and the latest reviews say that such an SMS has never been sent. My default settings go to the German interface in Play Store. Back on Telegram again :)

^ Sorry to hear that. I haven't installed Sicher yet (still researching) but have encountered similar issues with any app that requires my phone number. My problem is that I use the Apple US App Store (more stuff, movies, books, magazines - provided I buy US iTunes gift cards) and have to pay extra attention to product descriptions just in case certain apps only work with certain cell networks. Recently had those issues with destructible phone number apps, most of which only work with cell providers in a few select countries.
