Morning everyone,

Just a shor blurb about myself.

I have been working with different distros since about 1998 or 1999. Started with the old Caldera Linux, then found Red Hat around release 4 or 5. Tried Mandrake, PC Linux OS, then hit Ubuntu, and finally Mint.

Basically stayed with Debian bases because of package management. Tried Arch, it was ok, just not for me.

Got started looking at minimal distros starting with Crunch Bang when it was still Ubuntu-based and have been slowly trimming my desired system config down.

Now I found BBQ and am totally loving the differnet releases. So does my 6 year old netbook.

Before long I will not even have a WM, it will just be tmux and that is it. :-)

Hope to learn from everyone and contribute where I can, though I will probably take a while to catch up with everyone else on CL workings.

Assuming that this is more about design choice than resource management:
This Thread and this one might be a good place to start.

If you're looking to actually save resources, then read practically anything that Pidsley has ever done. His total install sizes and memory consumption are the things of legend. I don't have the link to where we actually tested them out, but it's pretty much certain that WM's are not actually the biggest issue when it comes to memory allocation in many cases (if I recall correctly, a sensible choice of terminal emulator and more sparse shell actually made far more difference...but don't quote me.)

Good-old Buntu-#!, those were the days :) I was also a #! user when it still fitted a CD...

We are quite TTY-enthusiastic here, so if you get stuck or have problems, just ask :)

And yes, as Joe said, WMs are usually the smallest problem in memory footprint. Even f*cking kwin is a comparably light WM. It's more about what service get started automagically. Also, init systems do not make such a huge difference: I have a systemd-booting minimal system that runs with 26MB RAM in X. That's still less than a out-of-the-box Debian netinstall in TTY. So: don't believe the hype. :)
