Greetings!

Unread post by R0b0ty » Sat Jan 12, 2013 8:30 pm

Hi, guys. This is my first post here. I also lurk on the Crunchbang forum.

I've been checking out LinuxBBQ 'Proof' Live for a couple of days now (running on an older Eee PC netbook - which I call my "toy laptop"). Earlier today, I had a chance to "chat" with a couple of you on IRC - thanks for the help. Anyway, I'm really enjoying 'Proof', as it's pretty light and 'kind' on my little toy. Currently, I'm just getting familiar with the menus, settings, etc.

First noob question... is it possible to 'apt-get install' packages using the Live USB? Didn't work for me:

Code: Select all

bbq@grill:~$ sudo apt-get install xchat
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package xchat is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'xchat' has no installation candidate

Hello Roboty, nice to see you.

Yes, you can - first update the cache with

Code: Select all

upd
and then install:

Code: Select all

ins xchat
It is, however, not persistent: after reboot it is gone. By the way, if you open a terminal, type

Code: Select all

start
to get a menu for CLI apps. You can chat using

Code: Select all

irssi
too.

Awesome. Thanks, machinebacon.

On a separate topic, is this the right place to post questions similar to this? I remember seeing a linux*noob forum as well... Just want to make sure I'm in the right place (so as not to annoy people). :)

Welcome to the forum! Yes, this is the place to ask for support. Check the wiki first (click here), and if you don't find your answer there please open a separate topic in the "BBQ Support & Bug Reports" area here and provide as much information in your first post as you can. The other forum is more for a fun place to hang out.

Thanks for the kind welcome, guys.

Any way that you Admins can change my username from "R0b0tyLinux" to just "R0b0ty"? It would just match my registered nickname on Freenode IRC, etc. Not a big deal if it's too much trouble.

Cheers!

What's with this 10 character requirement anyway? Irritating!

The 10 character policy is no longer required as of last night. The anti-spam policy has been updated with a more secure question system to prevent bots being able to register a username.

You can change your username if you want, now that you are registered.
