Re: Would like to ask about GPT/UEFI fellas and fellettes.
It is a bit complicated, I read stuff then forget how it works.
I only came across it once, on a 2nd hand Mac - only ubuntu on CD (not Usb) works to make the right GPT/UEFI combo, certainly doesn't help new 'nixers with new hardware get into the spirit of the thing. Especially with newer machines with no optical drives.
there was a good site some where with a good explanation. I'll try and find it.

Quite easy IMO: I don't buy newer PCs, so all the spins I put up here work for anything that was built in the early 2000s. The people who already have the newer firmware there's a bunch of alternatives :)

I think Macs still work with refit (or refind or what is called today).

I have enough old hardware collected now that I hope to avoid UEFI and GPT for the rest of my life.

^ agreed.
I think Hunt played around with refind, not sure if he ever got any joy with it. I just put ubuntu on it and called it a day.
I did get haggis working with - oh yeah but I had to keep the CD in and 'boot from HDD' on the menu. being as these imacs have a bit of a death grip on the CD's wasn't a prob.
Don't the Arch fellas have a good GPT / uefi section on their wiki?

In a short sentence: frugalware's GPT has fucked up my porn collecting hard disk anno dazumal, so for me GPT and all that (modern) shit is dead.

Re: Would like to ask about GPT/UEFI fellas and fellettes.
I installed Arch on UEFI. All went smoothly.

No dual-boot. Only Arch. Customer asked for that. Slightly different (not harder) than installing non-UEFI, by the way.

I put Arch with UEFI on an Asus X551CA. A pretty decent machine.

Re: Would like to ask about GPT/UEFI fellas and fellettes.
Might sound very stupid, but here's the deal:
- get a computer with 4GB RAM
- install some Linux
- add virtualbox
- create a machine inside vbox with static hard drive size, 20G
- install WinXP there
- turn off networking
- boot into XP and install your oh-so-needed proprietary software
- profit.
Very stupid?
Bizkit, just a side note - one of our BBQ core members was working for Microsoft, so don't take offense if somebody takes offense. Of course you are free to express your feelings - question is: who wants to know? ;) Really, it doesn't make much sense to put a lot of hate in something verbal that just infects the good mood of you and others. We know you hate Microsoft (doze, whatever you may call it), but I'm sure you don't want to read in all of (eg.) my posts what I hate. :)
