Good question. The easiest would be to change the "Welcome" text after registration. Do as you think is best. We didn't have anything like this before, so it cannot be worse :D

I would like to see this.

I don't personally have a problem with people lurking here (at least after their first post). I am a member of the Arch forum, and I regularly log in there to read and learn, but I almost never post. I would not like to have my account deactivated after a few months of inactivity. But this is different from people who register here and never post at all.
I am also lurking very rarely on the Arch forum but you can do that from Google, too, or without an account.
There are just so many bots, if they register and never post I would say, adiós. At least one post after registering.

Now I saw Bacon beat us to it with his suggestion, great. The matter was handled swiftly.

there is a 'expect a verification reply email' from the user, so their email has to be valid too.
Ie activate after clicking reply or a link, I guess thats not all that useful.
How about some suggestions for killer security questions?

Well we have the anti-spambot question, so these users who have registered ACTUALLY HAD TO TYPE something. No idea why these cowards guys don't take their 30 seconds to post 'Hi'.

According to the phpbb forum and the header of the anti-spam question mod, bots can now google the answer.
Which is why I was thinking of a modification of the questions, like reverse an answer. 50% don't seem to be googleable ie are secure. so...

I missed this, but good to know we are taking care of shy bots.

They are quite good questions (i.e. which desktop environment uses Openbox as default window manager), and if a bot can answer correctly: hats off, I remove the fucker manually :D

With the last 50 registered users we have 19 posters, some quite active. :) On the previous 50 there are 43 with zero posts!!! So we are doing a little bit better. :) But there is one of them that I really would like to have an intro from. #390, that is registeered with the name "vic2". Who are you? I am intrigued.
