Re: Distros of interest
^ I thought that looked pretty 'raw'. It's easy to install from git, add patches, recompile and generally pimp out. Give it a shot if you get time. Alternatively there are old bbq spins that use recompilable dwm (decomposed dromedary and chili(?)). DWM is very nice and worth the time (if you have it).

Re: Distros of interest
I've never tried spectrwm. I'd better download Ceramic

Re: Distros of interest
It's quite a good tiler, easy to customize. Editing .spectrwm.conf should be enough, but if you want to hack into the keybinds add
into ~/.spectrwm.conf
and also
depending on your keyboard layout, of course.
But as said, it actually comes with very sane defaults. Emacs users want to change MOD-x (which deletes the active window in spectrwm) to MOD-Shift-x for example ;) I learned it the hard way ;D
Code: Select all
keyboard_mapping = ~/.spectrwm_us.conf
and also
Code: Select all
cp /usr/share/doc/spectrwm/examples/spectrwm_us.conf ~/.spectrwm_us.conf

Thank you for that
Re: Distros of interest
^^ yes, indeed thanks mb. Just started playing with spectrwm and I like it a lot. "Sane defaults" is right. it's got a very clear and comprehensive man page, too.
dwm was the first tiler I ever learned about (all of six months ago) and got comfortable using, so it's been my default. time to think about maybe changing that.

just say "thanks, man"
Re: Distros of interest
oh, and spectrwm's sample config file is practically an instant tutorial on how to customize it. this is awesome.

Re: Distros of interest
Yes, spectrwm is a nice wm. Flexible too, which is nice.

Latest slackware based Austrumi 3.3.3 Has Palemoon Browser, MPV, Libreoffice, SpaceFM, Emelfm amongst others and has FVWM as window manager.

Re: Distros of interest
I love the FvwM themes from Austrumi, but there is one thing that I don't like.. Austrumi is loading everything in RAM, which is faster. I know. But after closing some programs it doesn't seems to release everything.. So it grows and grows in memory usage. But I get your point, a linuxbbq edition with the looks of Autrumi would be a hell of distro :)
Re: Distros of interest
^ you could build one -- it's not that difficult :)
But seriously, building a spin with all that might be a bit of work; not to mention much bigger than we like to build right now.
And I can't speak for bacon, but after all the recent upgrade issues, I am done with sid.

Re: Distros of interest
Pidsley I volunteer right now :) It seems to be stupid, and I can build almost everything.. besides a distro on cd or whatsoever :)
Just the last steps are abracadra to me :)

Re: Distros of interest
^ Great! A properly-configured fvwm spin would be an interesting addition. bacon has a post here somewhere about roasting a spin. I will look for it.

Re: Distros of interest
uhum, there'll be an upgrade of Adipositas around New Year, maybe. fvwm, might be interesting to make such a spin (without the GTK bloat), but on the other hand: apt is everybody's friend ;)pidsley wrote:And I can't speak for bacon, but after all the recent upgrade issues, I am done with sid.

Re: Distros of interest
Apt is indeed a very good package manager. the Sid issues can be "interesting" but I still run my Roasted Roach install as Sid. Thank you though for the solutions to issues that crop up eg. Xorg. Also running Academy with Jessie Repos (as per Bacon's post on tracking Debian Jessie) and its very stable with JWM as the desktop with XFE goodness.
Wouldn't mind a Slackware spin to play with sometime but would ceni work with it?
Yes FVWM would be interesting:)

Re: Distros of interest
^ Ceni will not work with Slackware (Ceni stands for "configure /etc/network/interfaces", a file that is not existing in Slack), but it's super easy to set up the network, just needs an edit in the /etc/rc.inet*, or even easier: netconfig. That's why many of us love Slackware: you basically only need a text editor to make your system work as you want it.
