Re: Distros of interest
I remember when we were all running sid. For me the upgrades just got too big and slow, and major things started breaking (remember the xorg fiasco?). I also remember on the munchwhistle forum when el_K admitted that he had gone back to stable and I thought "huh, that's interesting..." -- took me a while to get there, but now I just want my main machine to work, I don't need the latest everything, and I don't want to worry about upgrades. I run some bleeding edge crap on test machines, but the main machine stays stable or oldstable.

Re: Distros of interest
^ You are right.
It is true. I run stable on my main machine because we all have a life now. :D But sid is still there if you want it and I think it works as usual if not even better than before. I know Debian Unstable is far better than any fixed release from the other mainstream distros. Though nothing beats the *reliability* of a Debian Stable release.

Re: Distros of interest
I'd never trade Debian Stable with something else on my server. True, I just reach it via SSH and run a bunch of services, but everything needs to be reliable on this little machine, and Debian Stable has proved to be the perfect choice over the years.

^ +831 hosts agree here too :D
I've done a few work upgrades now squeeze to wheezy and weezy to jessie - which have all worked out - haven't asked the team about buster yet. might have to blaze the way on that :D

Re: Distros of interest
I have one machine here that was Jessie to Stretch and will be Buster. Another one is from Wheezy to Stretch and now will be Buster. Debian just gets the shit done and works where other systems do not even offer that kind of 'upgrade-ability'. I never reinstall, period.

It is a z80 kernel and a collection of programs, tools and documentation that allows you to assemble an OS that can:
1 Run on minimal and improvised machines.
2 Interface through improvised means (serial, keyboard, display).
3 Edit text files.
4 Compile assembler source files for a wide range of MCUs and CPUs.
5 Read and write from a wide range of storage devices.
6 Replicate itself.

Nope. That is nothing for us I think. But Wux is running something like that before they came forward. :)

Re: Distros of interest
I've been wanting to try KDE for a while - maybe something like KDE Neon or Manjaro KDE - since I've heard it's come a long ways in terms of responsiveness and power efficiency. The thing holding me back is the browser. I'm one of those weird types that won't install qt apps on a gtk based distro and vice versa. There's no viable qt browser out there that gives me Firefox levels of configuration and extensions. Grrr....

Re: Distros of interest
I tried Plasma, how they love to call it nowadays and it is a lot lighter but sometimes it also depends on the distro, it won't be light at all in OpenSuse because of all the insane stuff they add there.
Neon is maybe the lightest of all the pre-cooked distros.
Plasma runs fine but it still is a confusing thing to me. Too much noise. It is like why I still prefer spectrwm and not awesome.
Responsiveness yes, power efficiency, not sure about that one. I still think it consumes too much stuff in the background and it still starts horribly slow.
And no, there is no good Qt browser, forget it.
Will I use Plasma in the future? I do not think so. Maybe in 100 years. It changes constantly and I am fed up with devs playing with DEs and never consolidating.

Re: Distros of interest
I tried Plasma a while ago, because it promised a snappier UX than GNOME, but it wasn't the case for me. It's still too "blocky" and "widgety".
Re: Distros of interest
I can always count on you guys to test KDE and remind me again why I don't use it...
At this point my hands are so used to my ratpoison keybinds I don't think I could use anything else. I still have evilwm on a few test machines and I always have to think when I start one up and face the blank X screen. I never have really understood why people use awesome or i3, or why i3 is so often recommended to people who want to try a tiling window manager for the first time.
