Congrats to another Debian release. I will be updating one machine that originally had, actually I cannot remember anymore, in the next weeks or coming month and of course my main rig will be getting Bookworm as soon as I have some more time.

Spiral Linux, based on Debian stable has a new release. I am thinking of at the least check out the Gnome iso. Were quite impressed by the previous, did not install that one though. Maybe this one if it looks and smells good.

^ Not sure if I'd go with it, but it reminded me that the next Ubuntu LTS will probably need some careful consideration from me, because snap is going to be more and more relevant and I'm not sure I want to deal with it.

I just say Debian. Now it even comes with firmware preinstalled. Bookworm is the best release ever, also if you are a Gnome user, the version is relatively recent. No snaps, no commercial shit and it just works, but I am preaching to the choir, right? :)

Got a rare moment of tranquility, so decided to take my mind and stress down two clicks by playing around with 24.04 noble noodle or whatever they call it. Honestly can´t make the name stick.

First impression is that it is very smooth, simple, autopilot, with an ok choice of default applications. So there are some stuff that needs to be managed, or just install the mini version with utilities and Firefox. But that needs some managing too of course so it equals out in the end more or less.

Had a hard fling with 21.10/22.04 and were still curious of how it looks and smells now. Anyway, does anyone care about the OS anymore? Is it not all about apps, clouds, virtualization, sandboxing etc etc etc and I do not know what else fancy stuff there is nowadays anyway? Sigh.

I better stop now, or I ´ll end up in a rant. :|

^ I think I won't upgrade to the new LTS this time. I've been on 22.04 since it was released and, by avoiding snaps altogether, I only had minor issues that I have eventually fixed.

Still, I don't use my home laptop for anything that requires Ubuntu in particular. I pretty much end up with the same bunch of programs every time: Librewolf, Thunderbird, Emacs, Celluloid, KeePassXC, occasionally Zoom. Not much else to be honest.

This summer I'll have some time to play with Debian stable and understand if I can do everything I need with it. If so, it'll be "goodbye Ubuntu" for real this time.

Yes, probably a good description for most of us. We use a handful of favorite applications and not much more. I will play around with it for a while and see how my preferred apps work out. Looks a little bit clunky and clumsy on this old laptop though. Well since this is not a finished product it might change for the better, or worse.

The upcoming 24.04 Ubuntu LTS has been very very buggy lately. Understandable that they want to fix everything and some more before release since it is a LTS release. Think I will check it out again when released since I have a soft spot for their Gnome session. :)
