Unread post by darry1966 » Mon May 04, 2015 6:56 am

Nice thread!

I like the following, in no particular order:

- Budvar (CZ) http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/budweiser- ... -12o/1316/
- Plzensky Prazdroj / Urquell (CZ) http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/pilsner-urquell/717/
- Jever Pilsener (DE) http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/jever-pilsener/4003/
- Fuller's London Pride (UK) http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/fullers-lo ... rised/288/

I'm not a heavy drinker, so I prefer one cold bottle of 'good' beer - here in China it's quite hard to get good beer, the better ones are imported, and quite expensive.

- Spatten Optimator http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/spaten-optimator/2094/
- New Belgium 1554 http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/new-belgiu ... ager/1266/
- Ommegang Three Philosophers http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/ommegang-t ... ers/13667/

I personally go for beer that is similar to a liquid loaf of whole grain bread. It needs to be coffee dark and have a heavy breath to it. I have been going through a few different brewers recently to try to find a new regular, but so far nothing compares to the above.

For local beers (ale):
A nice pint of Woodeford's Wherry (pronounced like 'very') is a perfect pint for a sunny day and a packet of crips in a pub garden.
Anything those guys make is really good.
otherwise I suppose any lager;
Michelob was nice and has a sexy bottle.
the Budvar bacon quoted is really nice.
don't mind a bit of hoegaarden (weissbeer, just a small glass)
if not - then whatever cheap piss is on offer at the shop :)

Wow great replies guys. The Budvar mentioned is the only one I have seen so far in NZ however I'll check out some UK Ales Wux.

As it's a nice sunny day (and a national holiday) had a bottle of St Peter's organic ale with a BBQ!
Which, if I'm to be honest, wasn't that special - nice pretty bottle and organo-eco-warrior bonus points - but not special.

Here I go.

The one true love with wheat beer is Maisel's Weisse Original: http://www.maisel.com/unsere_biere/mais ... al_19.html
I live here and the brewery, you already know it, is just some minutes away from my place.

I won't mention all the beers in this region but they are among the best you can find in Germany (Franconia). The Maisel's Weisse Beer Fest btw is this weekend. :)

One more from Franconia that is more mainstream, Leikeim Premium: http://www.leikeim.de/index.php?id=7
It is the only Pils the Bavarians make right.

The best Helles (pale lager) and one of the oldest breweries in Germany and the oldest of Munich (1328) is Augustiner: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustiner-Br%C3%A4u

Let's go to the east (actually center) of Germany, from Thuringia, a Pils, Altenburger Premium: http://www.brauerei-altenburg.de/produkte

Now we go to the north, an excellent region for beers with a ton of hop, yes, Jevers is great but I prefer Flensburger (border with Denmark): http://www.flens.de/produkte/sortiment/ ... /pilsener/ or Einbecker: http://www.einbecker.de/sortiment (Lower Saxony)

It is mostly in German but the pics speak for themselves. Maybe you have to click that you are already of age.

Then we have of course the Czech Staropramen and maybe some others.

The only stuff I drink in Serbia is Jelen: http://www.jelenpivo.com/vest/85/History.html But so does everyone there. I find it OK.

In Spain I have always a hard time to drink the piss they offer me but there are exceptions like Alhambra from Andalusia: http://www.cervezasalhambra.es/en/our-b ... erva-1925/, have some clickies, the beer is high quality, all of them.

The Voll-Damm (pronounced vol-dum, :) is also quite good, from Barcelona: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voll-Damm. I like this more than any heavy Bockbier from Germany.
There are probably some more I forgot. Yeah, actually from the region where I lived, Xàtiva, http://www.lasocarrada.com/. Heavy Flash content, sorry. The beer is called La Socarrada, Valencian. It has a Mediterranean taste of rosemary. This one is high class.

I will stop here for now.

But I will tell you, do not touch San Miguel, Mahou in Spain even though they bought the smaller ones I mentioned and nope, Beck's is not a beer, at least not for me.

I have tried the staropramen and alhambra before, indeed nice tasty beers.
Would love to go to a beer festival. Went to a pissup/event in a brewery which was great.
I drank a ton of beers in Portugal, can't remember any of them - just cheap piss really :)
Never got on with any French lagers; 1664 tastes like it's made with some sort of cooking gas, Stella, it was OK, hardly stella.
There never seemed to be much more than that on offer - or heineken, at the bars - so yeah.
otherwise drinking to get drunk was a slab of 24 stubbies (25cl) for 6 euros!
Classy eh?

You guys tell me there's 'only Becks' and 'just Stella' and 'no Maissel' (insert 1st world problem meme here!), I have to drink horse piss (giving the horse some dignity here!) like Liquan, Yanjing, Harbin or Qingdao. Latter is acceptable. Former are a slap into the face of every brewery.

Qingdao is acceptable yes. We drink it sometimes. But you are right, plenty of better choices here.

Damn Ivan...I feel like such a beer pleb now.

@MB: When I think of 'beer I want to try', I can't say that Chinese has ever been the first country that I think of. I almost want to know how bad they are just for a frame of reference.
