Papers/Texts

Unread post by GekkoP » Thu May 28, 2015 5:40 pm

So to avoid bloating other threads but also to make it easier to collect interesting papers/texts we found online. We already have something similar about music, let's keep it different here.

I'll start with something that might be interesting for software developers: Out of the Tar Pit

The Marshmallow Experiment

http://www.whatispsychology.biz/deferre ... experiment

http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/psp/21/2/204/

"Children who were able to defer gratification were described by their parents as being more assertive, confident, and more academically competent than those who were unable to wait for a second marshmallow. In the second follow up study in 1990, the ability to delay gratification correlated with higher SAT scores."

^ Nice reading Gekko, and it is a bit weird that filesystems haven't evolved so much tbh.

Although I have very little interest in going into the medical profession, I do enjoy reading some of the papers available through PubMed, especially those related to Psychology.

"Prepulse Inhibition of the Acoustic Startle Reflex in High Functioning Autism"
Abstract wrote:High functioning autism is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication as well as repetitive and restrictive behavior while intelligence and general cognitive functioning are preserved. According to the weak central coherence account, individuals with autism tend to process information detail-focused at the expense of global form. This processing bias might be reflected by deficits in sensorimotor gating, a mechanism that prevents overstimulation during the transformation of sensory input into motor action. Prepulse inhibition is an operational measure of sensorimotor gating, which indicates an extensive attenuation of the startle reflex that occurs when a startling pulse is preceded by a weaker stimulus, the prepulse.

^^ the pre-pulse current has also something to do with intracellular calcium levels in epilepsy.

^ Really? Now that is interesting! Prepulse inhibition has been something I have wasted time researching recently. The Am. J. Psych. also published an article dealing with the occurance of PPI in the relatives of Schizophrenic/Schizotypal patients. If we were to increase intracellular calcium levels in those relatives, perhaps we would expect to see a less intense startle response? Or perhaps epilepsy alone can be related to those calcium levels?
