Just what I was looking for
I found this project on wikipedia when I was looking for a light weight distribution. My search string in the page after I loaded the list of distributions was "2015"
Once I located this the install process is very similar to OpenBSD/NetBSD and, with no junk. I was able to fully customize the distribution the way I did back in the late 90's.
Initially I got the full desktop with around 40-50MB of ram in use. Exactly what I need. I intend to use QEMU on this device...
This installs FLAWLESSLY with the exception of having to add a mem=1952M to the kernel command line on an Acer C710 (google parrot) with SeaBios..
I wanted to reach out and say hello and attach a screenshot.....
Thank you for making this. It saved me a lot of time and effort of stripping out a distribution (:

Welcome to the 'Q. opt1k! Glad you found us. Chromebook installations can be a pain in the behind! One quick tip: you might want to sync your xcolors with so you can start using some dank xcolors via the dkeger tool B)

Re: Just what I was looking for
Thanks for the warm welcome, and advice. I am looking into that tool now. It's been a while since I've been this deeply involved with configuring and customizing a Linux desktop.
The great thing about the testing distribution is that all of the chromebook hardware for this device gets full support in kernel 4. The next venture I might invest time with would be the suspend/resume and power management interface. Here comes more reading!

Re: Just what I was looking for
I think I need to remove xdm for dkeger and username2xres to work...

Re: Just what I was looking for
welcome, and I see you found the irc channel
as far as xdm and dkeger. Its just a script that allows you to select a new color palette from a list. I think what DC is referring to, is to point the env-info script to pull the correct colors

wuxmedia: the early 90's style is the only way to go in my book (:
This is not next step, its a little bit more compelx than that, but not much
The basics are as Follows
rox-filer = launcher panel on left
mwm = window manager which minimizes icons to look similar to next step, or maybe like windows 3.1 if you're into that kind of thing...
yeahconsole = drop down console with hotkey
conky = on the right
ive been working on trying to get kvm up and running and its been kind of a pain in the ass...
i might as well post another screenshot ...
If anyone cares about qemu kvm in a lightweight environment without libvirt this is what I've got so far.
One could put this in /etc/rc.local and daemonize kvm
# options i might use later
#-usb -device usb-host,hostbus=1,hostaddr=8
#-vga vmware \
#-vnc :0 \
#-usbdevice host:058f:6387 \
#
# connect with xtightvncviewer -compressionlevel 9 -quality 0 localhost:0
screen -dmS kvmwinxp kvm \
-m 768 \
-hda $HOME/qemu/posready2009 \
-cdrom ~/ISO/WinPOS2009.iso \
-vga std -nographic \
-vnc 127.0.0.1:0,lossy \
-net nic,model=pcnet -net user \
-usbdevice tablet \
-usbdevice host:058f:6387
I dont know if theres a better way but this seems to work without installing a lot of applications and libraries. Which is a good thing.

Hey, welcome to the grill. It's people like you who keep the BBQ philosophy alive, so thanks for using LinuxBBQ and thanks for posting here. Feel home!
Interesting 90s setup, a bit CDE'ish with a pinch of Afterstep. MWM, one of the oldest window managers, dear friends, so treat this auntie with respect :) I think FVWM can do something similar too (iconify windows).
And yeah, beautiful avatar you have there :D

The intent wasn't only to be nostalgic while turning heads, but make full use of googles wonderful open hardware! Without their useless blunder of an operating system that they conjured up with their marketing drivel.
If only they had used a real linux distribution (:
I have thought about using fvwm, thats what was included with RedHat 5.0 and Slackware back in the day. I am familiar with it.
A recent observation is a lot of people on this forum seem to be using a WM similar to i3.
Or they are using tmux in a full screen console?
I might create another user to test out other WM's on.
I am open to suggestions, as long as they are lightweight. Ive got 2GB of ram to work with and I need to run a kvm for field work.
I've been trolling over xwinman.org looking for ideas.

Re: Just what I was looking for
Just for fun, added the rox desktop icons, and themed the sidebar. Probably not going to keep it this way.
Re: Just what I was looking for
We have a screenshot section. Its organized by wm. Or you can create a section just for yourself, in the scrot by user sub section.
We love scrots, so keep on posting. We like to stay organized.

Re: Just what I was looking for
Some of us use i3, some use cwm (it's actually openbsd-cwm as executable). I am most of the time in spectrwm (former 'scrotwm') which does quite exactly what I need. There's quite a lot of love for bspwm, swm, 2bwm and other rather 'obscure' window managers here on the forums -- they are not in the repos, so you'll need some headers and browse github and compile from source (which is comparably painless).
As dkeg pointed out, the screenshot section is quite interesting and it covers literally every WM that can be built in Linux.
If you want to go full dictator with your window manager, I'd take WMFS (window manager from scratch) as the Mekka of configuration. :) To make shit working quite well straight out of the box it's spectrwm (IMO), but it's really a question of preferences. For a lightweight floater, it's probably cwm. These are very light on dependencies (probably they don't suck in anything except of the main package).

Wow welcome opt1k, I really like your 90's style set-up, kudos for being original, and you will feel right at home here :)
