Those nasty "Sid ain't built for rollin'" remarks...

Unread post by Potatohead » Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:45 am

Well, you know the drill, you're having a family meeting, and as usually all the uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews start bragging about their rolling distros. And it won't take long before Uncle Bob, after his third beer, starts snagging at Sid: "Sid ain't built for rolling, it's a bloody hack! Why don't you use distro ..
, which is specifically built to roll, unlike dusty Debian, no matter how you hack it or spin it"

So what do I say at the next family meeting?

you just respond: 'well, that is your opinion.'
...then walk away and get a drink.

Sid ain't build for rollin'? True, it's built for putting the whole shit on fire.

I can vividly imagine what distro these 'family members' are using. And it makes me super-happy not to be part of their clique.

Well, you know those family meetings. Grandmother telling about the old punch card machines and Granddaddy telling about his time with CP/M. The BSD-girls in their own corner and your crazy Uncle Jean, who keeps shouting that microkernel systems are superior.... don't tell me your family meetings are different.. :-)

And MB, that Foo-distro is better left alone, I agree :-)

hmm, my family meetings are all about my uncle bitching about how he refuses to watch The Hobbit because it is a heretical movie, and me afraid to even suggest a healthy conversation about the role of psychedelics in a modern society. oh, and everybody uses Windows (except when they got an EeeeeeeePC that looks like WinXP but isn't, and it works like crap but they won't let me fix it by installing the BBQ :)

Here it is always the same at family-meetings, they pray there windows into heaven i'm the black sheep of the family with my love for linux. But when shit happens i'm always the first one they call.
When i talk about Kde, Gnome, Lxde, Xfce, Fluxbox, .... they declare me crazy.
With windoms no problem... yeah right.... :lol: :lol:

my mum - "this laptop is rubbish" = doorstep. (thanks for my laptop's mum)
my mother-in-law - has 2 computers, still uses the one with '98 on it to print - because the printer's plugged into it. obviously impossible to plug a USB printer into a recent laptop...
my dad / stepmum - MacOsX, iPhone, Apple crazy ( my fault, but at least i stopped using macos before it was cool, back in 9.2.2)
my stepdad - owns several companies, so he 'has people' to do things like computers.
grandparents - 'what's a computer'
don't have family meetings very often...or at all.

Heh heh. Ok, on a serious note. I am happy to have some linux people in my Real Life. I have 3 brothers, no sis.
Me: Linux PCs, Android Phone, Android tablet;
Brother 1: Apple pc, Blackberry phone, Apple tablet;
Brother 2: Linux PCs, Android Phone, Android tablet;
Brother 3: Windows pc, Android Phone, Android tablet;
Friend 1: Windows pc, Apple Phone, Apple tablet;
Friend 2: Linux PCs, Android Phone, Android tablet.

I have to say, the Linux that Brother 2 and Friend 2 use is Ubuntu :-( But, it IS linux

Only @ work the corporate d*ckheads force us to use MS products. It's on workstations and - the horror - servers.... WTF ??? Why? Why? First I thought they got money for that, but it seems that they really choose it out of free will ???

Yes this thread is detailing, but I am the OP, so no problem...... And yes, IRL you don't get many questions on the various rolling distros.... :-) to be honest, although we Do talk a lot about IT things. Too much, says my wife... !

@MB Lol, that s what my daughter says as well. When I use her Win laptop, I *USE* it. Which means installing & deinstalling things, changing settings, deleting bloat and breaking the thing. But the average Win user is afraid to touch anything and they furst buy a 300 GB disk, but wont install anything, because that "slows the computer down". no comment, indeed!

Potihead: time for you to roast her a cute little LiveUSB distro ;) Girls love this!
Set a nice wallpaper => you are a hacker :D

I mean, what do people usually do in Windows? Surfing, mails, listen to music. Can be done from a LiveUSB stick too, minus pain in the ass :)

"Rolling" is up there with "bloat" on my list of "most meaningless and misunderstood Linux forums buzzwords."

I don't even mention computers at family gatherings since my parents switched to Mac last year.

^ good idea about USB distros for girls :)
