Heya Evvabody

Unread post by kondor » Thu Oct 01, 2015 8:40 am

I've been lurking around the grill a little, and haven't posted 'til recently. The smorgasbord can be a little overwhelming.

So, a little about me . . . I started out plinking around on the Amiga, trading floppies, dumpster diving, homemade zines, the demoscene . . . I didn't understand it then, but those really were the best of times.

Well, all good things must come to an end, and software patents soon killed the Amiga. I switched to a Mac for the graphics. My web design 'career' soon followed.

I finally got wise to the evils of proprietary software when Adobe acquired Macromedia and killed Freehand. Not putting up with that shit again. Illustrator is just retarded.

I've been 100% linux for about 4 years. When I have issues, I generally just bumblefuck my way through it and try to learn something new along the way.

I can't remember exactly how I stumbled on LinuxBBQ, but the retro homepage sold me almost immediately. I really dig the chaotic, irreverent, DIY vibe around here with zero fucks given for 'professionalism' and other empty corporate platitudes.

So there ya go, folks. Imma grab a beverage. I'll see ya around the grill. :)

hey kondor, welcome to the BBQ! sounds like you found your spot. out of curiosity, 2 questions:

1. where are you from?
2. what is your favourite animal?

(ja, always the same questions for me. this is really all you need to know about a person imo ;)

Zines! I remember those. I made a few cut-and-paste (like with actual paper and real sticky paste) dadaist-psychedelic collage photocopy flyers back in those days. Cool. I'm newly registered myself, but I'll say welcome anyway.

(I remember dumpster-diving for food and stuff, too. But I can't say that was my favorite part of 'the scene'. Still, it was good times. )
just say "thanks, man"

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. AmigaDos was actually kind of unixy. A good foundation that helped me quite a bit over the years. :)

maso: Zines are actually still common in Brazil (and probably other parts of the developing world where tech and connectivity are lacking) there's a lot of really creative work there. Meanwhile, it seems like every goddamn website looks exactly the same thanks to 'Responsive Design.'

rhowaldt: I'm from Salt Lake City, UT. Non-Mormon, because the church is a cult and a racket. But the computer graphics scene was pretty slick back in ye olde Amiga tymes.

Oh, and I prefer the Himalayan Condor to the Andean variety.

Action shots, you say?

Yeah, plenty of action here. Ongoing chaos is more like it. :)

Ion tailgater, actually. Gets about 12 hours battery life; more than I can say for the stinkpad! It's all strictly temporary, I assure you. Even so, it's pretty comfy for an improvised setup. BBQradio is rockin the tunes and it fits together like a watch!

A giant magnet under your thinkpad, cool I like you already.
Like the Amiga link (made a lot of music on Protracker 2.12b) and yes a nice intro to command line (have a look out for AmiWM if you haven't already for some retro fun, which actually works quite nicely as a WM)
Then I too went to the Mac for college, nearly got a webdesign job, but fucked the interview up by not bringing any of that new 'multimedia' shit on CD.

So yeah - Welcome to the board. :)
