Edit: YESSSS!
So, every 20 posts it breaks the page. Took us 3 years to realize huh.

Re: Hi!
That is not so bad. It took me seven years or so once to finish a small paint job at home. We all got something to fix. :)

Re: Hi!
I have never understood why people preface usernames with @ in their posts. My username is pidsley, not @pidsley. Some forum software will generate an alert if someone refers to you with an @, so that makes some sense, but that's not the case here.
I always read it as "at-pidsley" and to me the @ just makes it harder to see usernames in posts.

Re: Hi!
pidsley, that makes sense. the only real reason i can think of for doing it is so that you can see directly at the start of the post who it is addressed to specifically, like a visual reminder. other than that, i agree that it is strange and there is no real reason to not just write the name as i just did here. @pidsley i always consider indeed just that: (directed) at pidsley.

Re: Hi!
^ Gekko, I thought that was probably it. And rhowaldt, that makes some sense, but many people just use it all the time (every time they refer to another user by name).
It's just another one of those things that bugs me. I will STFU about it now.

Re: Hi!
yeah you're right, it does get overused. it comes from Twitter, indeed. be happy we don't have hashtags on the forum yet ;) - those would get confusing here though... "i tried to execute the "selfie" command as root like you said but i dont think i have it installed"
thanks for bringing it up. in many cases also here it makes sense to just forgo the @, and i hadn't considered that before. i'm always happy with new realizations :)

Re: Hi!
have we ever gotten so off-topic in an intro thread?
sorry nomnomnom, this intro thread has become a bit like the girl that hopes for a kiss and then loses her virginity by getting anally fisted by 18 sweaty grillerZ in a train station toilet.

Re: Hi!
Well let this thread serve as a good example and inspiration to newcomers of what can happen when you inroduce yourself at the BBQ! It goes on and on and on, so if you still not have made your intro, come forward, anyhting can happen here. :)

Re: Hi!
the biggest difference between this intro thread and the other intro thread is that the OP actually comes back again.

Re: Hi!
^ I'm back! I can't get on as much, though :( I had to put my data plan on a huge diet, and now I have to purchase wifi whenever I can at the truckstops (their wifi sux major dinosaur ballz, btw). One of these days I am going to figure out how to test my router using that aircrack thingy, but my interwebz skills are seriously lacking! Lols! Hope you guys are having a great weekend, and I seriously don't mind my intro post going deep space nine :)) You sometimes learn the best stuff when that happens!
Sir! Put down the hammer and slowly step away from the computer.
Re: Hi!
Ok that is cool, hope you get your wifi thingy going. And well the BBQ is not for everyone, not everybody got the stomach to digest the things offered on the menu. But it is ok to check out and test I guess. If you don`t, how will you ever know? Plus the archvortex i am back thread is in fact five pages something long. :)

Re: Hi!
I see we served some great off topic. Regarding the @ again. One more reason for me and nowadays I use it very rarely is to differentiate strange user names form other stuff. Imagine the idiot's name is pulse_audio?
I would say the @ serves also as a formal term of address to somebody. Most of you I know for a long time and it seems strange to address Baconface like @machinebacon. Seriously wtf.
