boruch's new guy post

Unread post by boruch » Tue Jan 26, 2016 7:35 am

I got an email nudging me to post to this board once I took the trouble to register . . .

Aloha. Someone posted about this project on the Manjaro-i3 forum, so I started to poke around a bit, and am beginning to get impressed. Impressed enough, at least,to register.

If I do decide to dive in and either build a version of BBQ or try someone else's, it would probably be based upon slackware with a newer kernel, or upon debian without Poettering-ware (no offence intended, maybe), and using a frame buffer interface instead of X.

So far, I've noticed some of your members have similar interests. For example, I found the framebuffer flavor on sourceforge, and machinebacon's thread http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2441.

My plan A is to putter around a bit and poke around the corners of this site, and then figure out what I want to do. My plan B, in parallel, is check out how members use the i3 window manager, which has become my darling these past few weeks.

Aloha.

^ Hullo and Welcum to the grill boruch!

iIrc, quite a few of the grillers are or were using i3 (i think Wux still rocking it). For slackware based spin, take a look at Bowlful.

Enjoy your stay and don't forget to drop by the irc at #linuxbbq on freenode.

Glad to see you have made your way here :D

I still use i3 from time to time on some of my installs, although to be honest ratpoison has largely replaced it. As Frank mentioned, you may want to check out Bowlful!

Hello and cum well on the BBQ!

Good idea to stay in the framebuffeT (yes, actually framebuffeR is incorrect), it's so much sexier, no misleading icons, no distraction by bling-bling, and of course the smell of (get back to the) roots...

Have fun!

Ok just putter and poke as much as you want, that is cool. Welcome to the grill boruch and enjoy your seasoning whichever plan you end up with. :)

Welcome! I run i3 on all my machines. It's productive at work on two monitors and stays out of my way (especially with vimperator on iceweasel, keyboard driven without a URL bar/menu)... and on my little 10.1" netbook screen it really helps with screen real-estate.

^^^ Status bar on both screens. My monitors at work are identical and I feel like having one desktop 10-14 pixels taller would mess with the dark symmetry I try so hard to achieve. ...however at home my monitors are asymmetrical (one 22" widescreen and one 24" standard placed vertically), so it's something to look into. The question is, CAN IT BE DONE?
