no window manager section?
Seems like there is no window manager section where people share configs ideas etc for various wm's. I am a little surprised by that with this being a BBQ site with versions based on various wms. Maybe I've overlooked it somehow.

I think... maybe you can see a bit more of the forum now?
My fault, been fiddling with the new poster rules in an effort to thwart spammers/etc.

Re: no window manager section?
Some window manager configs end up in the scrot section ((in the appropriate window manager thread.)
And we collected some configs on git: https://github.com/linuxbbq/wm-configs

^ and that, which also seems appropriate, one gets a scrot of it.
Just don't use the man page for examples of tweaking your configs ;)

in fact not much is posted config-wise there, which makes me believe that most users either put their shit on github or simply use "mostly default with a few quirks" ;)

Re: no window manager section?
Thanks for the replies, I was mainly interested in cwm configs as I don't know it, so already have enough to go on now. At the moment using i3 but tried a lot of different ones my favs being, Bspwm, Herbstluft and dwm.
Re: no window manager section?
Exactly. Most of us don't spend a lot of time on wm configs.machinebacon wrote:in fact not much is posted config-wise there, which makes me believe that most users either put their shit on github or simply use "mostly default with a few quirks" ;)

All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.

Re: no window manager section?
I usually just used google to find ready-made configs if I just want to 'test' a WM without spending too much time on understanding the options. For cwm I just took Christian Neukirchen's example and removed what looked uninteresting to me. I generally use the [mod]+[return] keybind for opening a terminal and [mod]+[d] or [p] for dmenu, so these I always change if needed. Everything else depends anyway on what the WM can do. Many developers respect stuff like the home row, the free choice for [mod] (alt or super), or workspace switching with [mod]+1/2/3/4. Some WMs in the repos are not very nice in this regard (IIRC tinywm and wm2), so you need some kind of keybind-daemon running (xbindkeys or sxhkd) before the WM is being started. But yeah, err... the cwmrc has its own manpage with a working example.

Re: no window manager section?
There is only so much that can be posted around configs. Also hard to maintain as changes happen. It really would just turn into a monster thread of code tags. There are some, but generally, if you want configs, go to github.
As far as stealing, here at the grill, that is slang for 'use as a starter base'. Learn from it, make changes to suit your needs. Integrate ideas you find into your own. Be wary of a straight copy and paste. Things can go wrong, and there is no support with those that blindly do such things. The goal is to learn from others, right?
Have fun.

Re: no window manager section?
Hence the "monster threads" that were in the black and white themed openbox debian distro that is now discontinued. You get people reposting their new config based on someone's config two posts previous or 20 pages back, and so on and so on, and the one killer config that would benefit everyone is lost somewhere in 71 pages of shite. One good base config with a few examples should be enough for the users who come here to get started. Or as Pidsley already mentioned, go to LinuxBBQ Window Manager Configs of Awesomeness and grab one. :)dkeg wrote:There is only so much that can be posted around configs. As long as you share, attribute and learn.aaah wrote:Exactly! I don't want to spend time either when I can steal from others :)GekkoP wrote:^ Oh, but that is because I stole yours!
Re: no window manager section?
This. Using other people's freely shared configs (like those on our github) as a starting point for your own education is fine. Passing them off as your own work (or something you "found") is not.ivanovnegro wrote:As long as you share, attribute and learn.
Personally, I think almost every window manager should be tried as it comes configured from the repo. The person who wrote the window manager designed it to be used that way, and you can learn a lot by trying it and understanding how the writer meant it to be used. Then you can start building your own config a little at a time, and you will learn more this way. Starting with a large config from someone else just means you get that person's idea of how things should work, and you won't learn as much. It may include features and other crap you never use or understand, and when it breaks you will be unable to fix it.
I think this also applies to other things, like zsh. Too many people start using zsh with the grml config (or worse, oh-my-zsh) and then they have problems because they have no clue how the config works. I think it is better to build your own config from scratch (taking parts of grml if you understand them) -- you end up with a much leaner config that you understand and which works for you, and you learn much more in the process.
All just my opinion, of course... :)
