I'll just drop these here for your reference:

Great guide to ThinkPads: https://yttrium-tyclief.github.io/guide ... index.html
Used ThinkPad buyers guide: http://ktgee.net/post/49423737148/thinkpad-guide

I will say that my T410 was probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. Kerbal Space Program and Minecraft can run well on it, even with the Ironlake Intel HD Graphics. Easily upgradable to 8Gb of memory, HDD/SDD is a cinch to replace/install. I've spilled my fair share of coffee, iced tea, water, et.al. and it hasn't so much as sputtered.

Boss confirmed up to 500 quid for a lappy. So that gives me a nice search window.
He said he thought thinkpads were ugly... (He's a Mac user, what do you expect) ...but solid and the 'team' seem to like them, and "...they play well with linux.."

^^ Great! The X1 is an elegant looking computer, imo, and it can take a beating, too :)

Nice, those look like sweet machines. I'm thinking of picking up a T420.

Looks good. Only one thing for me when I buy used ones, your mileage may vary, I always want the screen and keyboard to be top notch, the case is not so important if it has scratches.

this is a 'proper' reseller - so, I mean, it is clearance and there is a scratch on the screen.
Not sure I'd get something off ebay, except in person.
