Work laptop

Unread post by wuxmedia » Thu Mar 24, 2016 7:59 pm

So after a little chat with my boss who denied me;
* spectacles / eye test (a bit of a stretch, the only other guy with glasses told me he gets them through the company, apparently not true )
* contributing to internet (HMRC doesn't go for it apparently)

He said he'd look at getting a work laptop, I think a dell XPS 13 would probably be out.
thinking something like this:
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/grade-a1 ... ersion.asp
or newish equivalent.
A 15" would be great, with these old eyes. But a 12 would be acceptable.
Anyone got anything they could recommend?

(I mean with the grill running on it, apart from the bloaty alert system and browsers running it's basically a terminal or two running, so the old one was OK)
But y'know feeling jealous of dkeg and his shiny machine, and of course so no more apple execs look down their nose at me :)

I think you should look for something like thinkpad e seriies or some refurbished T430/440. Relatively trouble-free in my experience.

I would also take the keyboard into consideration, not just specifications. you'll have to type more than really worry about memory management and 3D acceleration. IMO the old think pad keyboards are fantastic- of course tastes differ.

If I'll ever have to replace my Dell Inspiron 1525, I think I'll go with another Dell.

I've seen many different laptops in the last 4 years, thanks to different customers: Samsung, Lenovo, HP, Asus and Acer. One Toshiba, IIRC. I don't know how Dell is doing now, so I'm basing my opinion on a 7-years old lappy, but aside from proprietary wifi the hardware is rock solid and Linux just works on it. In the last couple of years, I've been using it 11/12 hours a day for work with no problems.

Always would recommend IBM, but my ACER aspire timelinex, has been rock solid since 2011/2012.

Bugger! Coca Cola shot out of my mouth and nose all over my 9 year Compaq Presario that I beat the crap out of on a regular basis. The casing is cracked all over, it's been through 4 keyboards, the screen is hanging on by one hinge, it's been through the jungles of Sumatera, Kalimantan (Borneo) and Papua, needs a new battery for only the second time, taken more shit and abuse than a war prisoner, etc. I can't seem to part with it. My kids have dropped it numerous times on the floor and it keeps on going.

I was planning on getting a Thinkpad or an Acer and am looking at the responses too. Thanks for starting this thread Wux!

^ and maybe one last "special" unstable release, especially for DistroWatch, before the next Lacipecsenye, Adipositas and Anorexia in the mid-year? I would totally laugh my ass off reading a LinuxBBQ MILFware release for older computers in their newsfeed.

MILFware... :)) yes best release name ever. Now back to topic. Wux, your boss should really pay for work spectacles. They would add both quantity and quality to your work. Which I am sure are at an excellent level already. But they would help you stay on the very top of your performance all day. They need not be so expensive either probably, I mean it is not necessary with any designer spectacles that costs £1000 just for the name on them and the rest comes on top of it. He could at the least split the cost with you. If you are at good terms with your boss, you can always suggest it to him. Worst case is that he says no. Depends also of course of how much he spends on the laptop. :)

Really. I would go IBM or some of the older Lenovos. But as names go I can assure HP and Dell, the old business models, are good. They are running here at home too.
