Intro - I Like Food

Unread post by console-hacks » Tue Nov 15, 2016 10:38 pm

Hey guys,

You might remember me as sunfizz but that is in the past. I had some good times with linux, then dropped it altogether to focus on real life. After eating an indefinite number of humble pies and finally getting my shit together, I have decided to come back with hopes to have linux as my main productivity machine again. Also, Windows 10 was getting on my nerves after crashing more than 20 times in one week.

As a side effect of getting older, I have become more chill and indifferent to most things. I do admit that I'm a bit of a foodie, and a music junkie. As a result, I prefer to cook up food and listen to music than work on a computer.

At the moment, I want to get my feet wet again and get up to speed with debian. I saw that there was no recent amd64 NOX or spectrwm, but no biggie. I could always start with a netinstall.

Questions:
1) Do I strictly need to use AMD64 to utilize my 8 gb ram stick?
2) Is the main focus of linuxbbq now terminal based?
3) Is viewing facebook via terminal a thing?
4) Where is the bacon?

Sorry, got no scrot/screencap of my BSOD, but I am glad to be here.

hello

you can use a pae kernel, on a 32 bit install, to use more than 4-ish gigs of ram

I do not have a facebook account, but I found this thing you might try:

oh sunfizz, yeah I recall you a bit.
1) what Rusty said, or grab the latest amd64 and attempt to upg that.
2) main focus is still involving X - mainly without GTK - but most releases are NOX. possibly due to force people to do the config from scratch?
3) no FB here either, dude :)
4) oh he's here, he's busy with RL, as most of us.

Well, the food section could do with a boost but the music is generally buzzing, due to Gslob

oh sunfizz, welcome back ;)

There'll be a 64-bit noX (Anorexia) coming before Christmas (because I'm such a fucking nice Christian). Yes, terminal apps only, because they can be run in X11 *and* in framebuffer.

I think that is the point Wux but he decides.

Everybody here is getting older, life is that way and I think this place established as to what the goals were at the beginning of the BBQ. We achieved it mostly and hang out and have fun. Nothing revolutionary. It is quiet, friendly, elitist, anti-social and very minimalistic around here even if it sounds contradictory.

1) No. There is PAE like mentioned by others though I use 64 bit exclusively nowadays due to upgrades of my hardware. I guess I am not the only one here even though most still give love to 32 bit systems.
2) Yes. Bacon said it. That does not mean you cannot enjoy GUI apps, I still do but they are really few. Of course if I am on an Xfce desktop I am already really bloated compared to all the WM magic here but even there I use mostly CLI apps.
3) I have a Facebook account because of family matters but I use it very rarely, so cannot comment on this.
4) It is all over the place because Jules forgot to do the dishes.

Welcome! :)
Whichever direction you decide to take (GUI/NOX) just have fun and make it your way.
At the grill you are the chef!
Sir! Put down the hammer and slowly step away from the computer.
