Hello. I'm Jesse. Just found LinuxBBQ a few days ago. Loving the community and philosophy. VIolator is my current favorite spin.

I grew up using MSoft. (3.1,95,98,XP,VISTA,7)
Played around on a Commodore Vic20, too.

I have basically no programming skills. I use to GOTO loop on that Vic20. Made me feel cool. lol.

Had some old lappies sitting around and decided to try Linux.

Ubuntu (hate it)
PuppyLinux (love it)
slackware (not l33t enough to get a functonal installation)
antiX (loving it)
LinuxBBQ {Cream, Lunchtime, BREAK!, VIolator} (in love)

Fave WMs: IceWM, Fluxbox, i3, JWM

posting this from a cheap ATT LG GPadF v495
Android (like it well enough)

may add more later

Welcome to the bbq Jesse. Thanks for your intro, I hope you will like the party, the meat, the seasoning, the music and the general vibe we got here. Looks like it from your intro as far as I understand. Have fun! :)

thanks for all the welcomes! LinuxBBQ is just fantastic. Fantastic learning tool. Great community. Glad to be here :D

P.S. In the i3 scrot thread wux asked about the synth in my screen.

SunVox 1.9.2 modular tracker DAW. Its tits. Runs on damn near any hardware. Written in Pixilang (I think its C inspired, but I dont know programming very good, so idk)

warmplace.ru Alexander Zolotov maintains all these wares.

I highly recommend checking it out. The Forum is pretty solid. Alex is super awesome.

welcome to the BBQ :) glad you found us

noticed your scrot in the i3 section, maybe you would like to try our "Rocks!" edition from 2013 ;)

https://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxb ... o/download

Should work well as live ISO, by the way.

@machinebacon hmmmmm, Rocks doesn't seem to want to boot for me. Hangs no matter what option I choose in the bootloader. Tried it on USB and CD on a fairly newish HP Pavilion and a super old Dell Inspiron. The very very top (like first row of pixels) goes all wonky when it hangs. Not sure what that is all about.

Cream, Lunchtime, BORK!, BREAK!, cardboard, adipositas, anorexia, lacipecsenye, Elixir (both archs),and VIolator all boot fine. In fact, VIolator is my new main setup on the Dell INSPIRONmini and Dell INSPIRON|B130.

Kinda raided the grill. Still not full :)

Out of curiosity, is the title Troll given to all newly registered users, or am I special? Image

^ Don't worry, troll is the first level :D

Wrt to the boot: you might add the boot parameter "vga=ask" or "vga=317" or so in the bootloader menu. IIRC you just hit [Tab] and move the cursor to the end of the boot line. This problem used to happen occasionally in the past, true. Completely forgot :)

Oh and forgot this one: http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=30

Just FYI, if you wonder why certain things (eg. wifi) are deactivated in the live session.

I looked everywhere for those release notes... I must be blind. lol
64bit explains why it didnt boot on that ancient INSPIRON|6000.
Wrt to the boot: you might add the boot parameter "vga=ask" or "vga=317"
Didn't work. This HP Pavilion g series might be the problem. 1366x768 native res. ATI card/chipset. Seems to have problems with quite a few distros and softwarez.

I will delve into Rocks! further as my n00b skills evolve. Looks pretty awesome.

Atm, I just loaded up VIolator on the old hardware with Audacity, Sonic Visualiser, and the WarmPlace Apps I linked to earlier. Serves my needs well enough. And I have antiX 16 on this HP set to Sid.

At some point, when my skills are not quite so novice, I'll look into Grilling up an updated Rocks! for the community. Might even try a BBQsidPup (puppy linux). No timeline on that, though. I'm still quite the novice.

Anywho, thanks for the warm welcome, again, and for all the links/help. I feel right at home. I can feel the Linux portion of my brain growing by the minute the longer I'm on the BBQ forums ;)

Jesse, the "lines on top (or bottom) of the screen is the actual output of the boot, but the video card resolution is not set correctly, so: Rocks! works, it's just the framebuffer not set right until X starts. So, let's try a two step method:

1) on your HP, boot into your normal linux. You probably have to install the package "hwinfo". Then, run:

Code: Select all

sudo hwinfo --framebuffer | grep 'Mode '
You will see a list of supported framebuffer resolutions, for example

Code: Select all

Mode 0x0305: 1024x768 (+1024), 8 bits
Note the 0x0*** code of your native resolution. You will probably not be able to set widescreen, so take something that is more standard than the 1366 width. We assume 0x0305 for now.

2) boot into Rocks! and make sure you add the following in the syslinux boot menu, after hitting Tab:

Code: Select all

video=vesafb vga=0x0305 nomodeset acpi=off noapic
for example, or you can simply try a

Code: Select all

video=vesafb vga=normal nomodeset acpi=off noapic
or maybe even

Code: Select all

video=vesafb vga=current nomodeset acpi=off noapic
Also try without "video=vesafb" in front of it, and maybe this one instead:

Code: Select all

video=uvesafb:mode_option=1280x1024-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap

Sorry not to have a 1-size-fits-all solution, there's too much gfx going on :D I know this problem from my old Toughbook (IIRC), and it actually happened with Zenwalk (!) a few years back.

^^ wow. Incredibly useful answer there.

I eventually got the Rocks! to boot, although not cleanly. had several hiccups during boot. Actually had to hold the power button almost long enough to poweroff to get it into the desktop (found that out on accident). I haven't the slightest idea how or why that worked or is neccesary.

Installing to the harddrive did not solve any of the aforementioned hiccups.

Played around for a bit. Looks like the entire Multimedia section of the Debian repos is setup and installed by default haha. Definitely no lack of software in Rocks!

Eventually I'll get around to attempting to get APT updated and the sources sorted out (most of them apear to point to no longer existing mirrors). See if I can't apt full-upgrade Rocks! and get it an up to date kernel. Probably Liquorix. I always notice an improvement in Multimedia apps with a Liq kernel, especially on not so hot hardware, surprisingly.

Rocks actually has a realtime kernel, or you can take one of the upstream rt kernels, too.

As for the dead mirrors, can you simply post which those defective ones are, and I fix that for you :)
