I'm curious as to what you are using on your old hardware other than your baked Linux?

Surprised no Devuan or 4MLinux.

If not a BBQ spin than just plain old Debian. But you can make every distro "light". Just use the minimalist tools from the BBQ philosophy. You can make Ubuntu or Fedora pretty lightweight using a netinstall route.

yeah, those are OoTB lightweight, as in #! RIP useful right away I suppose.

i never really thought #! was lightweight, maybe design wise it looked light, but in terms of memory usage it was as heavy as the default distribution it ran on.
I'd probably take Arch as a lightweight base (by default it is). An OOTB solution other than my BBQ roast would be AntiX.

For quite some time i'm positioned with Devuan i686 (netinst bare-metal) i i have tweaked it lots of deep or dirty let say.
I didn't get close on pid's tweaks but managed to made 21MB on X.

Other distro i usually recommend to the interested ones:
MX-16, AntiX, Alpine Linux, Void, LinuxBBQ, BunsenLabs or Devuan (netinst) / Debian (netinst).

The latter has ruined my mind a bit.
Jessie had (270 MB) ISO now Stretch is (375 MB) 100 MB more means more bloated into netinst. If it continues with this rhythm, I believe it will come 1GB one day.

Alpine Linux or Void Linux are my next target but i'm too busy with work that does not leave me much time available.
