Intro rvijay

Unread post by rvijay » Tue Dec 26, 2017 5:22 am

Fatmac reintroduced me to LinuxBBQ . Thanks a lot for this. After trying it a bit, decided to join the forums here. I like retro computing and have a long thread running at linuxquestions.org in this regard. I am not even into shell scripting, no coding experience. I just like to use Linux and tried different distros in the past. It is sad to see old PCs go a waste and folks being forced to upgrade. So I try to use older software, hardware.

Here is my plan in regards to learning Linux BBQ:
All this is a slow process and will take time.
1. IRSSI - change windows, quit, connect to different servers
2. Mount files
3. Install apps from Debian repo
4. Window Manager
5. Watch videos
6. Email
7. RSS
8. Music/Net Radio
9. Join their forum (This was done just now)
10. Learn other quirks about Linux BBQ, in detail
11. Learn about the different versions and the apps offered in them.
12. Learn CLI Linux well with time
13. To do, planner, scheduler
14. Install to hard drive

I have one request: It will be good to have all the LinuxBBQ related documentation in one file format for easy DL and offline reading. Or it can also be all the documents in one zip file.

Thanks for all the efforts here.

Best wishes to all. :)

Thank you for the welcome. I do like retro computing. However, I have mostly used boxed distros with little customization focusing on the media more. With time, I see the need and utility of being able to make custom configurations. However, it will be a while before I can get to that stage, I am a slow learner and also get distracted by other things. In the past I was easily satisfied if existing distro, software works. However, am poor, lead a simple life and look for cheap solo entertainment. Customizing software, trying out different desktops, changes etc., can be seen as a cheap but high quality puzzle. I already have everything needed, just need to train myself slowly to use them.

I have been thru the bad meat page here, it is sad that you all had some trolls that wasted your time. It takes lots of energy, skill and dedication to be a troll at such levels. Wish they put atleast some of it to good use to help others with time.

there isn't really one place or one file with all the bbq stuff on it. the wiki comes close. most things are just linux.
just ask any questions and we'll give it a shot to answer them

I used to dumpster dive before and found some old IT hardware that I still use. There are videos on youtube about folks finding and using older hardware. However Matt Malone is a real Pro at it.

If folks were good at command line perhaps atleast some of this older hardware can be saved. For anything older than P2, Kolibri OS is good to consider, the BSDs also. However, I have had very bad luck with the BSDs, they always failed to install for me.

Welcome, look at the study above also. The eWaste is at a very high level these days.
The most I found when I dumpster dived were the peripherals like mouse, KB, cables etc., But there are folks on youtube with a car, they drive around and find lots of unwanted but good computer stuffs compared to me.

Apparently the server needs this installed to create PDFs from wiki:

Code: Select all

The following additional packages will be installed:
  htmldoc-common libdrm-amdgpu1 libdrm-freedreno1 libdrm-nouveau2 libdrm-radeon1 libdrm2 libelf1 libfltk1.1 libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libglapi-mesa libllvm3.8 libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 libx11-xcb1 libxcb-dri2-0 libxcb-dri3-0 libxcb-glx0 libxcb-present0 libxcb-sync1 libxdamage1
  libxfixes3 libxft2 libxinerama1 libxshmfence1 libxxf86vm1
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  htmldoc htmldoc-common libdrm-amdgpu1 libdrm-freedreno1 libdrm-nouveau2 libdrm-radeon1 libdrm2 libelf1 libfltk1.1 libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libglapi-mesa libllvm3.8 libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 libx11-xcb1 libxcb-dri2-0 libxcb-dri3-0 libxcb-glx0 libxcb-present0 libxcb-sync1
  libxdamage1 libxfixes3 libxft2 libxinerama1 libxshmfence1 libxxf86vm1
0 upgraded, 26 newly installed, 0 to remove and 17 not upgraded.
Need to get 18.7 MB of archives.
After this operation, 122 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] fuck off
Abort.
but the 'help' page happily creates a PDF without it?
I'd just hoover the site up and have it as offline, this should help

I tried to use wget on the docs here but it says permission denid.

wget --mirror --convert-links --adjust-extension --page-requisites --no-check-certificate --no-parent https://linuxbbq.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Tried this and it is working. Thanks :)

This is the thread I started at LQ almost 5 years ago about old computers, still going strong. That thread there helped me become aware about LinuxBBQ.

Just noticed that the LinuxBBQ portal blog and cookbook sites are not loading on my older browser Seamonkey v 2.9.1
Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:12.0) Gecko/20120502 Firefox/12.0 SeaMonkey/2.9.1

Following is the error message I get. Have no choice but to return to my homepage there:

This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked SeaMonkey to connect
securely to www.linuxbbq.org, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.
Normally, when you try to connect securely,
websites will present trusted identification to prove that you are
going to the right place. However, this website's identity can't be verified.

What Should I Do?

If you usually connect to
this website without problems, this error could mean that someone is
trying to impersonate the website, and you shouldn't continue.

Technical Details
www.linuxbbq.org uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for linuxbbq.org

(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

Also curious, how big is the Wiki approx. ? I have an older PC, been downloading the wiki for a few hours now and have only like 200 Mb or so left on this partition. Tx in advance.

Try this:

We had this problem already reported somewhere but I am not a web guru.

Yes see the main site and related all links on top there, the forums work. Just the links I mentioned that are on the side of the wiki page don't work. Also, the development link fails for me but I am not a developer so this is ok.

Some of the pages need updating, others are very old and some stuff is just dead. This is a volunteer project.

There is one thread I recommend to read before downloading any ISOs:

When I was quite young and went to school, computers and programming were accessible only to select few at the University Level. So basically all these things were under lock and key considering the expenses involved and their importance. I could not afford to buy a computer till much later in life. I still feel sad that life didn't present me with a consistent opportunity to learn coding.

It is very ironic that these days folks are even throwing desktops on the streets sometimes, what was under lock and key then is open today but even for free folks don't care for it. In this regard, here is a humble suggestion for future LinuxBBQ distros. Kindly include compilers for the following: Basic, Fortran, Pascal
This will increase the retro feel and value of LinuxBBQ. Thanks for consideration in advance.
