Hi LinuxBBQ

Unread post by jargon » Sat Aug 03, 2013 10:34 am

Thanks again for the kind invitation. Just thought I'd pop in and have a look around and say hi. I've been using Linux since 1997. Started with SUSE at university, a bit of Red Hat on the side during those first years. A very short stint on Fedora when it was still Fedora Core (4). Moved on to Ubuntu and stayed (this was job-related, actually) until things started going downhill with Shuttleworth and with the Ubuntu community. For me that was around Karmic Koala. I stuck with Jaunty Jackalope while searching for an alternative Debian based distro. Eventually I found CrunchBang around 2010 and used that primarily up until two weeks ago or so when I changed to Gentoo, for distrotesting purposes. But somehow I found myself hooked and I don't think I will go back to using CrunchBang. I still think CB is a good distro but Gentoo seems a better fit for me.

I'm still very much into Debian and use it own servers whenever I'm in the position to make the choice during the job. Less now at my new job than at the previous but that's alright. For the past three years while using Debian on the servers I always wanted to do my own custom-fitted Debian-based distro. I always thought the Testing branch would be my base but sure why not Unstable? I never found the time to follow through with this due to lack of time and resources. Fortunately that's changed for the better now so I guess it's perfect timing that I got to hear about this place. I will also check out the IRC channel. Thank you for having me. :-)

Hello jargon,

thank you for coming over, feel welcome at the grill and enjoy the stuff.
As Gentoo user you know how to fix the mess you bork yourself :) Now Debian is just half as much work with as much of fun :)

And as for rolling your own barbecue: you have my full support.

Take a seat and have a smoke!

Welcome Jargon. Gentoo is a superb distro, honestly. I was once upon a time all about some Gentoo, and then I got tired of recompiling on my old pM. Anyhow it's good to have you.

Unstable has proven to me to be MORE stable than testing.

Welcome Jargon! Have a look at what we offer. Beer, booze, baccy and of course meat, I even saw some grilled scorpions if you are into that kind of stuff. ;D Though, no cookies.
