PRINCE OF DARKNESS: just wanted to show one of my favorite Carpenter's at the missus. She liked it, but she may have liked because of my threats.

BOYHOOD: now I know this is one of the most appreciated flicks of the year, but to me is just a decent coming-of-age that took way too much time to tell you the life of a family. I could see myself in this story, it happened many times during the watching. But it sure is a film I'll forget about soon.

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Uhm, from the IMDB: "Three strippers holding a young girl hostage come across a crippled old man living with his two sons in the desert. After learning he's hiding a sum of cash around, the strippers start scheming on him."

This is like the very definition of old-school grindhouse. Car racing, killer strippers, bad acting.

NAKED (Mike Leigh): weird but nice, in a weird way.
All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.

GET ON UP: James Brown would not be happy about this one. And I would be there with him, sharing the same feeling.

Gone Girl - had higher expectations but not bad though.

Imagine if you had a wife like that would you sleep better ?

GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL: as it always happens with Anderson, I couldn't care loss about the characters and the plot.
WU XIA: Peter Chan's upgrade an entire genre. Wonderful.

Say what you want about Cumberbatch and his fangirl army, but the man can sure act.

THE SIGNAL: the words 'computer genius' in the plot I read set me on this awful, awful movie. Avoid it, guys.
TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT: Cotillard is very good, but this kind of French realism doesn't always get me. Fine, anyway.

PRIDE: good flick, it tells something I didn't know about UK political history.

^ Great movie Gekko, nice LGSM or MSGL movie

DEAD SNOW 2 (Død snø 2) : Not exactly the warm christmas movie, but every bit of this Norwegian zombie movie is cheesy and funny as hell

HEADHUNTER (Hodejegerne) : Another Norwegian movie, starring the main actor from Max Manus. Not exactly brilliant, but still enjoyable

A TOUCH OF SIN (Tian Zhu Ding) : A very good Chinese movie about 4 different acts of violence (an employee of a corrupt company, a gun-toting thug, a whore, and a night club worker).
rice no more.

^ I love A TOUCH OF SIN, great choice. (but I love everything Jia Zhang-ke related, so I should STFU)

ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND: finally put my hands on this one. Not as good as THE DEAD AND THE DEADLY but the second half is pure fun.
GUNMEN: when Kirk Wong was good and Tsui Hark was king only good things happened.

THE DROP: I really like Hardy, but the slow pace here is somewhat distracting. Ending is revealing though.
BLUE RUIN: can't understand the praises. If a movie makes me ask to myself "why are they being so stupid? Why are they doing that?" too many times it simply doesn't work for me.

I watched the new The Hobbit movie with my son, the other night. Meh. They sacrificed all of the literary plot to make a spectacular action movie - almost like a superhero comic book.

MAD DETECTIVE: couldn't resist to start a new year with an HK flick. And this is just awesome, one of the finest To's / Ka-fai's.

Happy New Year, BBQ! After a several month internet hiatus while I got the fuck out of Florida (I moved to Charleston, SC, USA), I am back. Been haunting the #! forums over the holiday, but thought it was time to say hello. Hello!

/OT

Has anyone seen the very hyped Birdman? I've liked most of Keaton's roles and wondered about this "comeback" vehicle. I'm so wary off films that get this much positive press, though, as it's always a let down (Lost in Translation and Oh Brother Where Art Though, for example). I did see Iñárritu's 21 Grams when it came out and was impressed, but I think Del Toro is fantastic in everything he does (my mind implodes every time I see him in Sin City).

Cheers!
You'd prefer 鼠標?
