5.4 for Blackhat? The world doesn't deserve Michael Mann.

The Rhythm Section

I entered looking for some jazz-tinged and smokey-club noirish, I came out with another spin on the old Nikita premise. But then, yeah, I've always liked strong female characters kicking the living shit out of everyone, and as it turns out this is better than Red Sparrow, which I wanted so badly to file in my guilty pleasures cabinet.

Extraction

An impressive long take which I am still thinking of, sure, but sadly not a film about dealing with tar.gz files.
Thinking back, that tar bomb xkcd might actually make a good movie plot.

Leave Her to Heaven

Possibly one of the most beautiful films ever made with surely one of the most beautiful women ever put in front of a camera.

Am I the only one who doesn't find Rob Zombie's films particularly interesting? Not that they are utter crap, but every time I watch one of his works I leave the couch with a "Is that it?".

I am not considering to watch any of Zombie's movies. Not my thing. I saw parts of one and it was bad, I had no idea then that he was directing.

^ I sometimes can't help it. I'm getting old so horror films have become less and less present in my regular viewings. Still, every now and then I sneak one in just for old time's sake.

For instance, I was pleasantly surprised early this year when I caught the new Child's Play, a franchise that as silly as it is I enjoyed very much ages ago. And the new one is not that bad either.

Yeah, I know, I am still a kid inside.

First Name: Carmen

Not the first time Godard leaves me with less than I was expecting. Of course, with his career span it can happen.

Not many interesting viewings lately, except for:

Cop
I missed the Blu-ray release of this super-tight James B. Harris'. One of the best fade to black in the history of cinema.

Casting Blossoms to the Sky
From the late Nobuhiko Ōbayashi, one of his latest films. Moving to say the least.

Lake Mungo

If you're up for an unsettling ghost story, go for it. Not documentary, not a horror, a weird cinematic object that understands how to use digital and sound/noise instead of relying on jump-scares.

A fantastic movie about gastarbeiters in Germany. It is still very relevant with the whole refugee situation and as a foreigner myself in Germany I can feel empathy.
A masterpiece of German cinema by Fassbinder.

Give Me Liberty

Easily one of the best films I saw this year (not including old classics, I mean). Seek it out if your idea of comedy goes beyond noble sex jokes and pleasantly apt fart moments.

Jade Dynasty

Ching Siu-tung is such an important figure in my appreciation for Hong Kong cinema I cannot believe I'm saying this: please, do retire now. You should've done it when The Sorcerer and the White Snake came out.

^^ Ah, I've heard of that movie (thanks to the Herbie Hancock music) but never really sat down to watch. Will give it a spin later. I reckon most of the racial issues depicted in that film still haven't gone away today.
