ELLE

tl;dr my film of the year

Recipe:
- half a cup of Renoir
- 2 spoons of Buñuel
- add salt and Kubrick

I am going to write long and deep about this, but not now. Now I just can't. Just like Miller last year, I started with tears of joy and ended with even more tears of joy. This is my kind of cinema, this is why I love this art so much.

Verhoeven could have just gone in with the dose of nasty satire you should expect from him. Too easy, it blows minds away with a touch that only few can master like this. Huppert is beyond outstanding.

Just finished Hunt For The Wilderpeople. Decided to watch it on a whim, mainly because it was cheap ($0.99 rental). Figured it could at least put me to sleep if nothing else, but then I realized it was directed, produced and screenwritten by the same bloke who did What We Do In The Shadows. Sure enough, it ended up being very entertaining. Not quite as good as What We Do In The Shadows (which I highly recommend), but definitely one of the better comedies I've seen this year. Recommended

Train To Busan http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5700672/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Pretty good zombie movie. Some parts are quite lame and cliché, but that is pretty much expected.

^ :)

In the zombies genre, I actually preferred I Am A Hero this year. But they're both good films, well-crafted and with some surprises along the way considering how hard it is nowadays to tell something new with zombies.

^ I know nothing about the manga the film is based upon, but that didn't ruin my viewing.

Geek note: the film has one of my favorite sequences of the year. I'll let you find it.

^ I follow the manga - though it's quite a trying read, sometimes it's hilarious how the protagonist goofs his way out of trouble, but other times he frustrates you to hell - but had no idea they made a film from it. Wondering how much of the original (21 volumes released so far) the film managed to cover, and what kind of liberties were taken. Need to watch.

^ Thank you. Also, if you feel like spending 80 minutes with a superb film (you haven't seen yet): The Dead, by John Huston.

And if you're brave enough and have 190 minutes to spare, In Jackson Heights is like putting poetry in a documentary. Should add it to that post.

^ Yours is a really nice list GP!

I've been meaning to check this movie out (alongside Manu/GP's list) The Handmaiden http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4016934/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1.

^ Weirdest film of last year. I love the director, but that puzzled me a lot. Have to watch it again.

Getting lucky with great films in the last few days. Ranked by how much love they gave me:

1 Magical Girl (Carlos Vermut)
2 Eastern Boys (Robin Campillo)
3 Deepwater Horizon (Pete Berg)
4 Love & Friendship (Whit Stillman)
5 Certain Women (Kelly Reichardt)
6 Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade)

First 2 are a tiny bit above the rest, to be fair.
