I know Letterboxd took the best of yours truly away from this thread, but I can't resist sharing some beauty I found recently.

I went back to Jonathan Demme. I always feel I'm not getting his greatness as much as he deserves. Of all the films he made, I picked the one I avoided because - shame on me - I wasn't "in the mood" when it came out in 2008: Rachel Getting Married.

And as it happen with Dolan's Mommy, now I have a new entry in my all-time favourite films.

Recent movie i like that featured him as the lead role is the one with him as this survivalist father of many sons and daughters, all of them prodigious. Forgot the title, too lazy to google it, but that one was great.

Finally caught latest Paul Schrader's, First Riformed. His best in a long while. Nuts, yes, but possibly one of the best I've seen this year.

Do you remember Combat Shock? That one Troma flick that was less Troma-y than the others? Re-released in blu-ray, I watched it last night.

It's still a bleak viewing, with that music and that ending. The young(er) me respected the low-budget feeling as much as your next indie-film-director guy. However, these days I am just too cranky to not think about it.

There's heart in this film. Heart where it matters. But dear me that acting is painful.

I am taking this two-weeks holiday to binge-watch old classics: Hawks, Ford, Sirk, Chaplin. A complete bliss. A title in particular: Gun Crazy, by Joseph H. Lewis.

Unconventionally (or, better, as usual knowing me as you guys do), I hereby declare Blackhat my favourite Mann's. On the umpteenth viewing, I can safely say so and hold the blu-ray next to me with much tenderness.

Continuing my re-appreciation streak, Tarantino's Death Proof has become my favourite of his. Granted, if you have no interest in the likes of Vanishing Point and Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry this can never be your kind of film. But to me it's just the right mix of homage and fun, deconstruction and retelling.

Obviously Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds are more accomplished works, but you know me. Driving one of those cars, drinking in one of those dive bars with that music, and cheering with crazy ladies actually quite accustomed to film history and pop culture... My dream.

I am getting old, am I not?
