^ True about the huge black thing in the wall, although I look at it as my favourite black hole where I can lose into whenever I need a break. (Only for cinema though, can't be bothered with regular television.)

Absolutely and that is why we want a projector, to have our own theater at home.

Tripping on Joseph Losey. His M remake and Eva are absolutely outstanding.

Thank you Manu for the nice article. I have piled a lot of Asian movies, not only because I love them but also because of your reviews.

^ Always a pleasure. In times like these I am losing the will to look for new films everyday, so I tend to just pick randomly from my shelves or hard drives. I so wish Hong Kong cinema can find that incredible energy it used to have, but everything changed for that industry.

I have been waiting for two years for this to happen, so you can imagine my joy when last night I discovered the director released it for free (both on YouTube and as a huge .mov file I promptly downloaded).

This is a challenging but rewarding work which uses a book I loved to spin the cinematic world around, trying to push it towards something new. It's Eisenstein and Godard through the eyes of youth, so you need to come prepared, otherwise it'll just seem like someone slapping you around for the sake of it (well, you may like being slapped around, so what do I know). But if you're willing to go deeper and accept cinema as an art that doesn't need to compromise to entertain, then give it a go. It's there, for free.

Sometimes I like to go back to what is now usually considered a great time for Italian cinema: the genre cinema of the 70s.

Contrary to popular opinion, I don't like much of this stuff. I know, I know Tarantino and the likes rave about these films, and in the mid-90s (IIRC) Italians woke up to discover and reconsider them too, but I find them cheap thrills.

Take Torso from Sergio Martino. A giallo and an early slasher, violent and with nudity here and there, a tasty soundtrack and what have you. The problem? The acting is stiff and frankly horrible, and they used to dub these flicks so it's all the more awful to my ears. The tension is completely gone for me, and I end up laughing at the screen instead of enjoying what is going on. Whatever the historical value, it's not for me.

I'm not even going down the mondo films route with this rant, since they are pretty much crap from and for sexually repressed kids.

Somehow I feel the urge to make a test drive through that period. I think I know what you mean but I am still in diapers when it comes to Italian genre cinema.

^ I'd start with Sergio Corbucci, one of the few I really like.

just to bring it down a notch, we just watched Dora something something (2019) and it was nearly as awful as you might imagine. Couple of well timed gags and Dora was quite entrancing (she's all grown up ok :D).
We watched Doolittle (2020?) and that was like a speed edit version or something. it was non stop but a bit forgettable.

That would be "Dora And The Lost City Of Gold"? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7547410/

"Doolittle"? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6673612/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_8

Forgettable, yeah probably. I just watch more or less forgettable series these days. Like a chewing gum. Tasty for a short while, then you spit it out. But entertaining while it lasts. :D
