Thor killed my computer
So, sometime between Friday-Saturday this weekend, when Thor was laying down some wicked thunder and lightning, my Coal/Cameltoe/antiX 32-bit machine here at work was fried. Logged out, but power was on, UPS failed, poor mofo is DOA. Now there's just my slackware box to play with, until I can cobble together another 32-bit machine from the various spare parts in the boneyard.

Had this too, once, thanks to a defective cable (fuck them, the power cord literally burned!) and fried my MoBo and a hard drive with valuable porn. RIP Spooner, we will miss you.

Damn, that is bad, almost happened to my main laptop last year, I really thought it was fried when Thor hit the building! I saw lights in the living room and thought Thor was gonna taking me with him or at least my lappy. Lucky as I was, nothing broke in the house, funny are the gods sometimes. Guess, we have a lightning conductor.

I initially misread your title as Tor (the anonymity service) and went WTF?!
As someone who lives in the tropics and experiences many a thunderstorm, I do share your grief. Nowadays, even though I now live in a building that has adequate insulation built in, I still invest in additional surge protection. Belkin and TrippLite make decent units. Not saying they do a 100% job, but I once had lightning fry my laptop and headphone amp a few years ago (I was living in a different house then), despite them being connected to a surge protector. The Belkin surge protector that I was using had some sort of "Silver" rated warranty, which allowed me to claim up to a certain amount of $$ upon damage. Sure, I had to make a few calls, exchange some emails, scan some receipts and bicker a bit at claims staff, but I got reimbursed 90% of the money spent after about 3 months. I suppose getting the laptop and surge protector from the same store (hence both purchases in same receipt) helped somewhat. I already replaced the fried laptop by then, but my savings account was happy.
Obviously, this won't bring spooner back to life, but food for thought nonetheless.
RIP spooner.

I had a similar thing, it only oddly enough managed to fry the ethernet and the sound. I replaced them with pci cards and was ok for 6 months.
the electrics here are my own installation and the thing trips out if theres a bit of a storm.
still had a NAT box go poof!
@Gslob - That's a good deal with the Belkin.
@bones RIP spooner, he'll come back bigger and stronger than before.
