^ how is alpine?
I played with it a bit, was planning to run my server on it (as alpine VM's running individual 'micro' services). bailed in favour of vanilla debian stable (which has worked OK)

I like busybox, so I like Alpine. (-: TBH, I don't really see much advantage to using it over Debian stable on a server, unless you really need the smaller size. It is pretty cool though; tiny and fast. The package database seems to have most things I need, and it is easy to get ssh and nfs running on it.

The guys in slade had a different solution to that problem.
But maybe it does not fit your style.

Put a treadmill on the floor, and you'll have yourself a new multipurpose machine.

^ as it happens I did get a treadmill from a garage sale and the desk is the right width. the treadmill needs some chopping about but should be able to get the console mounted. need more space for that to happen though, that's another useful thing about a standesk. No chair, well no office ass chair.

cost £24 (£10 of that was for the box of screws) and a couple of hours to make ... needs a better/wider top and some other niceties.

Slade... i might be getting a fancy mat though which cost more thatn the desk

^^ Pretty cool actually wux, how about a large rotating platform, where you put the treadmill on one side and a mat on the other end. It will be one of a kind solution and will make lots of people jealous (especially me) :)

^ Hey i didn't notice that geek cup! very cool wux!

Very nice. Might do something similar soon, just to remove a chair and gain space.

Don't think I'll ever get used to standing desk computing. It's just not within me.

I respect your opinion and Ivan's.
Just feels good to me. I don't do all day at it. The laptop does the first couple of hours in the morning sitting down at various places.

I just wonder would you feel the same about sitting down to DJ or take photos, or Ivan giving a lesson sitting down?
Maybe you do...
All the jobs I've had are standing up, did a desk job felt weird, like not working.

All those activities require moving about to some extent; as in my entire frame would need to move back-forth/left-right (Ivan probably has more freedom given the space at the front of typical classroom), even if it's just a couple of feet. I wouldn't be able to stand still - my feet just want to move about when I'm standing.

Short 5-10 minute bursts like using an internet kiosk at a library or airport are fine, but anything beyond that would be impossible for me. End up spending more time pacing about than doing actual work. I'd probably make a terrible surgeon even if I had the smarts for it.

Even while sitting down I tend to do that leg shaking thing that some people find annoying, or worse, I'd end up folding or stretching my legs in weird yoga-like shapes. Right now, I'm typing this bent into some weird Spider-man like position (like this, but not as cool); bum on chair, hands typing keyboard on desk, both feet on desk either side of keyboard...

It is true for me in class. I just cannot sit down even though there are some sitters among us and I heard their classes suck. :)

Of course that is one of the reasons I do not really need a standing desk and additionally I am a runner. But I can see the point if you are not really moving enough. Your back might be graceful to not sit all day the whole week.

It is a part of the idea, with a desk like that, to be moving around (relevant XKCD) at least moving feet around. They make insanely expensive rugged foot mountain pads to be intentionally uncomfortable / hard to stand stock still for any time.
Also most of the recommendations seem to be get a bar stool - or an adjustable desk to cater for standing for a bit and then sitting.
I don't particularly buy the whole 'humans weren't meant to be sitting all day' thing, why have we (speaking for myself) have comfortable bums then?

Yeah, given that at work you are moving anyway, coming home to stand at a desk would seem silly, I don't extend it to watching TV standing, when I did stand all day I would sit as much as possible.
