Yeah, me too. Too much effort because if you want to clean correctly you have to open the whole thing and maybe even change the thermal paste.

Re: show us your iron
sure, but then it might keep working for a few more years.
Well, I guess you just want a reason to buy an old thinkpad... that is ok.

Re: show us your iron
I used to be afraid of changing thermal paste until I finally tried it. It wasn't that difficult. It made a huge difference on one machine and not much on another.
Re: show us your iron
^ Ironically, same here. It worked on my Acer, it didn't change a thing on the ThinkPad.

I used copper antizeise on a few. Anything is better than dried old gunk.

Re: show us your iron
a lot easier to change the paste on ATX mobos, than on a laptop.
I had an old athlon HP and the thermal paste was just black dust, much better once it got changed over.
I feel the thermal paste is going on my Acer lappy. randomly spins the fans - although I say random, it's really whenever I do anything and the load jumps to 2.0 :)

Re: show us your iron
The fans on this machine, an old dell m90, used to spin up and stay on.
It would scream, and if you know someone with hair, they could have used it as a hair dryer.
New paste... nope... no change.
Turns out it was the graphics card.
So, I had to take that apart, clean it up, and add new paste.
Nice and quiet now.
The thing is not worth anything, measured in money, but it works well, so why not fix the little stuff, and keep using it?

I couldn't work with all those windows - glare is real and the evil day star is my sworn enemy.
I'm happy this thread got necro'd -- I'll post my stuff in 12 hours or less, have been meaning to for almost two years now! Sadly, still using all the same hardware.

Finally a member of the thinkpad crew!
Funny how the 'retro' site doesn't really work on a retro machine :)

p2 96Mb Ram running tinycore, quite nicely, as long as don't run into swap too much.

Nice stuff Wux. By the way I have seen and old leveno R500 do you think it is worthwhile buying it from a second hand computer refuse store?
