Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
I never experienced the old school ones, but this X1 2012 is typing really nicely.

^ That is exactly what I mean. My external keyboard also looks like that.
The other day my better half was on the phone and the person on the other end asked what noise was coming from the background, it was me typing on my laptop.

I dropped the fucking X1 (home schooling eh) right on it's open 'face' so screen and keyboard right on the tiles. the clips came out a bit. popped 'em back in all ok.

Salivating over a X1, G6 at the moment. But it is a lot of money for something that I in all honestly want more than I need. 1100 Euro ca. Well, nice to have something sweet to think and fantasize about at the least. :)
If that, or maybe when it happens, I promise to get rid of all old crappy hardware. Sort of clean out the closet and give myself a reboot. Yeah, old hardware can be fun, but at the same time it is old, worn, slow and low spec. Far from the standards of recent years. And it is noisy too. Thank god it does not smell like it sounds.
@ivanovnegro, congratulations to your purchase and welcome back to the T club. :)

Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
It feels good to be home again, a nice pair of old socks but they smell like new. This thing does not even produce noise. It came in such a mint condition. Though I forgot to tell the Polish supplier to give me a German keyboard, it is UK but QWERTZ?, he maybe thought that does make it German. No problem for me I can type blindly and German was set at install time of my distro of choice.
So my question to Wux, does a QWERTZ UK keyboard layout exist at all?
Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
Got a neat surprise kind of the other day. Were using the Ubuntu software GUI (or whatever it is called) and it it told me that there were updates to my X1 laptop. Ok, I were a bit suspicious first, but remembered to have been reading about such a function somewhere.
G´ed it, found the page, read and refreshed myself about it and did the update afterwards. It worked, but yes, I held my breath during the reboot.
Still breathing. ;D

^ Every now and then I do:
Maybe it's something similar to what the UI offered to you.
Code: Select all
sudo fwupdmgr get-updates && sudo fwupdmgr update

Not to my knowledge, no.ivanovnegro wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 10:58 pmSo my question to Wux, does a QWERTZ UK keyboard layout exist at all?
Did they just swap the keys caps over ?

Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
I saw this and thought what a cool idea. Pretty cool (as in large) price as well :)

Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
The Polish guy did that I am sure of it. No biggy. The Spanish keyboard is also QWERTY so I am used to it.
My Thinkpad is not that classic but oh boy am I happy to be back one one. I love my X201 and I love it more than the T400. I can take it everywhere and I bought a new battery (Poland again, a company that produces batteries) that lasts me between 6 and 7 hours working on that thing! Imagine when it is not doing anything. It is a big one that sticks out but the laptop is still very light, one hand only. So I conclude that they are not building such things anymore today.wuxmedia wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:06 amI saw this and thought what a cool idea. Pretty cool (as in large) price as well :)

Of course Xfce is really nice to the battery or any small window manager. One reason why I will not bother with Plasma or Gnome anytime soon.
Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
Yes, it is the same. After reading about it I tried the command and got the same output as the GUI. Choose to do the update this time with the GUI, will try with the terminal next time.GekkoP wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 10:24 am^ Every now and then I do:Maybe it's something similar to what the UI offered to you.Code: Select all

Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
I like my new laptop.
I still mistake the Fn and Ctrl keys for the Thinkpad arrangement.
I am tempted to give this to elder child once she needs a computer to do some actual work on and get my self a half not shit X1 again.

Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
Where do you guys get your Euro Thinkpads from?
I have a french site "https://www.backmarket.fr/" which is OK they do seem a touch over priced and I'd be very happy with a qwerty-esque keyboard (or pop the caps off a frenchy)

^ There are two great places in Germany, https://www.lapstore.de/f.php/shop/lapstore/lang/de/ and http://www.luxnote-hannover.de/. Though prices are higher since 'Rona.
But you can find them also on eBay. All of this is about used hardware.
Then there are https://www.gebrauchtcomputer24.de/note ... facturer=4, https://www.notebookswieneu.de/, https://www.afbshop.de/gebrauchte-notebooks?s=6&p=1, https://notebookheaven.de/gebrauchte-notebooks/lenovo/.
I cannot complain. There is enough choice and I do not buy new anyway.

Re: IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads
Bought mine from a local dealer who sells refurbished hardware. Not the cheapest, but practical. I am happy so far. :)
