Art, with a capital A, or not

let us talk some art. who do you love, who do you hate? whose paintings of chubby naked ladies do you masturbate to? which avant-garde metal sculpture gave you mystical visions while you were a child? which conceptional piece of post-Bauhaus bodyart makes you cry?

let's start with a relatively obvious guy: Salvador Dali.

Dali was a surrealist painter, and one of the greatest and most famous. he didn't give a shit about anything, he called himself a genius without shame, and did not see a problem with commercialisation of his art, or himself. for example, he got his autograph printed on many blank pieces of paper just to sell them, and he appeared in a couple of television commercials to promote chocolate or cars or whatever.
he is quoted as saying "i don't do drugs, i am drugs".

Dali got together with Spanish director Luis Bunuel to make the movie 'Un Chien Andalou', which follows dream logic, or something. i believe it is really about nothing at all, but art historians and critics have spent countless hours pouring over the film and trying to grasp its supposed meaning, which is funny :)

my favorite painting by Dali is the Temptation of St Anthony. it shows St Anthony naked in the desert having weird visions sent to him by demons or Satan or whatever to tempt him. he fashioned a DIY cross out of some twigs to ward them bitches off.



when i was a child i used to dream of scary shit like that, elephants with mosquito's legs and other extreme opposites.

Nice, I went to Dali's house in Figueres outside of Barcelona, on an art school trip.
that was fun, seeing the 100something ft tall Abe Lincon was amazing.

I did some conceptual metal sculptures back then.
I mostly enjoyed the welding and smashing of mild steel and the smell of the welding room.
as for [A|a]rt right now - no idea, I like Banksy he's pretty funny, but a bit old 8p

I remember a bunch of stuff from art history lessons.

my main regret of moving from France is I never got to write L.H.O.O.Q anywhere.

been to a few museums in Europe, including London, Amsterdam, Austria, and Progue.

I too like Dali, also like Basquiat, Kandinsky, Pollock, and have a few friends that produce some kickass art.

I have never really "been into" visual art. I enjoy some of it, but don't really know much about this artist vs that one.

I remember as a child being fascinated by some work of Hieronymous Bosch, The Garden of Earthly Delights:

I also love watching Picasso work in some documentary films. Again, I have enjoyed a wide variety of art, but never been a real student of it. I was inclined to Math and Science.

Among the dead ones, Mark Rothko is probably my all-time favourite. I've always been into contrast and how colours transition into one another. There are others, obviously, both living and departed. Too many to list.

@gutterslob: there is one i had not expected to hear. i actually know his work simply cause my ex-wife did her Master on Modern Art. if you are into color palettes and the like, Rothko is definitely a cool guy.

Victor Vasarely, my fave, of course being a Hungarian I need to write this. Famous for his op art 3D stuff, the things are exhibited in a private exhibition hall (owned by his relatives, IIRC) in Budapest's II. district.

This is one of those subjects that is so broad ranging, that I think "where do I begin?" Certainly, there is a lot of art that I appreciate, many of which have already been mentioned here.

I have found in my own life, though, that the art that moves me the most is the stuff created by friends, my kids, complete unknowns, etc. I have been moved to both laughter and tears by this type of artwork.

There is also artwork from "professionals" that I have looked at and said to myself "Seriously, that is art?" But far be it for me to judge what people create... to each their own.

I grew up reading comic books, and so was influenced by what I guess you might call "pop art." Off the top of my head, Frank Miller is a favorite. I also enjoy the works of Robert Crumb and Robert Williams.
