Linux News

Unread post by machinebacon » Mon Jan 13, 2014 10:19 am

A place to drop in links that usually would end somewhere in the Random Internet Section, or not being worth to give an own topic. So, this place is for news around Linux, FOSS and the whole crap :)

To start off:
CentOS is now officially part of RedHat: http://www.redhat.com/about/news/press- ... oin-forces

Bunnie's Novena, a completely open-source laptop: http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=3597

A new Linux-based OS for (smart)phones will be launched in March: http://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/fi ... omo-468572

Why Linux sucks:

Somebody wants to make some very valid points. Enjoy.

^Well, certainly lots of valid points. Since messing around with the BSDs, I'm finding there are many things that seem much better than Linux, such as fonts and general "wholeness" and integration (if these make sense), and some things that are more challenging, such as video drivers and Flash. Overall, though, I have to say I do really like the BSDs. But of course I like Linux, too.

Well, many things I completely agree with, independently of the GUI/console stuff.
! Linux security/permissions management is a bloody mess: PAM, SeLinux, Udev, HAL (replaced with udisk/upower/libudev), PolicyKit, ConsoleKit and usual Unix permissions (/etc/passwd, /etc/group) all have their separate incompatible permissions management systems spread all over the file system. Quite often people cannot use their digital devices unless they switch to a super user.
Word.

^Yeah, seriously. If it were me, I'd say "OK, screw VAX support." Really, who uses these, any more?

Can't get it to build SID currently, but easy and switching the system after installing is not hard.

All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.
