I just installed the new Xubuntu for a neighbour whose laptop was infected with the latest TeslaCrypt. He lost a lot of files and photos he can't replace. Surprising how many people don't back up their stuff. Read this today which was appropriate for my task.

Finally it happened. Firefox from experimental (newest upstream version 46) uses Gtk3.

Apart from that, Gtk 3.20 is indeed a mess. All Gtk apps look like shit now. But we already noticed.

No more 586 support in future Debian releases.

586 will still be supported in Jessie until 2018, and until 2020 if Jessie goes LTS.

I wish Debian would just switch to a non-PAE 686 kernel.

It's actually quite a good news considering how poorly received is that thing called "Linux" here. They went as far as providing offices with an easier GUI to ease everybody in, meaning at least they put some effort behind the choice. I'm surprised by my city, seriously.

Now find the official who set it up and get the support gig? :)

Just ask how closed source companies can go open source overnight (as he wants it) without having to let most of their workers go, who in return won't be able to support their families. He's been trumpeting that for years without even guessing at how it could be accomplished (and he doesn't care). He'll forget about picking his feet for a good 2 minutes to come up with a non-answer.

^ I guess he'll anwser something like: "they shouldn't have picked closed source in the first place". Probably.

Last time I met him and asked, his answer was "Closed source only works for client projects. Everything else should be open." me: "yeah, but how do we do it?", him: "change company strategy", he then walks away.

With the death of 586 support, Debian appears to be finally shipping a 686 non-pae kernel.

Install "linux-image-686" to get the latest rolling version, use get-kernel to select a specific version, or to see the available options.
