^My favourite hack and slash game :P I'm not bashing but it's a kind of fun to do a netinstall and see what monsters you can kill :)

I just installed the new Xubuntu for a neighbour whose laptop was infected with the latest TeslaCrypt. He lost a lot of files and photos he can't replace. Surprising how many people don't back up their stuff. Read this today which was appropriate for my task.

Finally it happened. Firefox from experimental (newest upstream version 46) uses Gtk3.

Apart from that, Gtk 3.20 is indeed a mess. All Gtk apps look like shit now. But we already noticed.

No more 586 support in future Debian releases.

https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... -i386-CPUs

586 will still be supported in Jessie until 2018, and until 2020 if Jessie goes LTS.

I wish Debian would just switch to a non-PAE 686 kernel.

IIRC this is Gekko's city:

They are testing Zorin OS to maybe replace Windows.

^ Yes, that's where I live (albet in the country side). Glad to know they are finally giving Linux a try.

"linux" in quotes, nice, now you can say; "linux? oh yeah we ran that for years before the govt." :)

^ :D true!

It's actually quite a good news considering how poorly received is that thing called "Linux" here. They went as far as providing offices with an easier GUI to ease everybody in, meaning at least they put some effort behind the choice. I'm surprised by my city, seriously.

Now find the official who set it up and get the support gig? :)

^ Uh, thanks for the tip. I have a vague idea about who could set it up, but I'll investigate. :)

Linux Mint quits codecs and forks forks.

How nice that TUI apps do not care about which terminal I use.

The real good news I needed to cheer up a little: Richard Stallman in Monza (Italy) on May, 28. Just a couple of hours away from my city. I'll be there. :)

Just be sure you leave before he takes off his shoes (or if he isn't wearing any.)

Just ask how closed source companies can go open source overnight (as he wants it) without having to let most of their workers go, who in return won't be able to support their families. He's been trumpeting that for years without even guessing at how it could be accomplished (and he doesn't care). He'll forget about picking his feet for a good 2 minutes to come up with a non-answer.

^ I guess he'll anwser something like: "they shouldn't have picked closed source in the first place". Probably.

Last time I met him and asked, his answer was "Closed source only works for client projects. Everything else should be open." me: "yeah, but how do we do it?", him: "change company strategy", he then walks away.

gg fuckface, gg.

The bit I found funny is; in house open source projects don't need to be 'open' if they stay in house.
Or something I can't recall.
Is that not the same as closed source, to an outside observer?

'we' treat him to lunch in London now and again. I don't get to go :)

With the death of 586 support, Debian appears to be finally shipping a 686 non-pae kernel.

Install "linux-image-686" to get the latest rolling version, use get-kernel to select a specific version, or

Code: Select all

apt-cache search linux-image | awk '/686/ && !/pae/'
to see the available options.
