I can't believe I did that

Unread post by ChefIronBelly » Mon Jan 27, 2014 9:12 pm

It was late last night low light conditions (that's my story sticking with it)

I went to put some music on and thought I have moc up but instead had mc up. Well that didn't work so well, and the message was something about missing driver or something. I spent 10 minutes chasing my tail before I realized what I had done.

Anybody else want to confess?

Sure

Code: Select all

dd if=linuxbbq_coal.iso of=/dev/sda
...and the USB was /dev/sdb.

Did the same exact thing as Joe 'bout two years ago. Bad times.

I'm sure my OS missteps could fill a large book. Fortunately, I have forgotten them.

Code: Select all

sudo rm -r /*/share/
Or some such mismatch.
wow that was effective, certainly got rid of the files.

You are no real Linux user if you never f**ked up your sda with dd. Been there, done that, haven't found the t-shirt yet.

^ Actually I did not fuck up wit dd *yet*. But then I started to use it later in my Linux career, already prepared with the horror stories in mind.

But sure I did something stupid, too, but like Bones I cannot remember what.

^ this because apparently Bones, Ivo and myself hold the same philosophy when it comes to Linux mistakes: if you make a really stupid mistake, drink heavily, and forgetaboutit.
All statements are true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true and false and meaningless in some sense.

As a thumb of rule ;) always test your commands without "sudo" or "su" :D
And if you change the content of files: comment, comment, comment :)

If they had a most wanted list for killing a mbr I would close to the top. I guess the bright side is you learn to recover fast from about anything.

Killing and fixing the MBR is something that should be taught in schools. I shot it at least 10 times, or even more. Especially at dual-boot times, back in the 1970s :D

On the laptop 6 OS', on the desktop only 17 (after my main HDD committed suicide -- no, wasn't a fucked MBR) - actually every newer BBQ spin gets its own partition, and I have some other OS' running, too.

Fucking up the customers computer is bad style :D Are you working as PC tech?

Ok, I have one anecdote but it is from my childhood. I once installed Opensuse I think it was, on a Windows machine, of course I got all that partitioning wrong and Suse ate the whole home computer. Luckily my father had a friend that fixed the machine. He asked me what I did and I said, nothing, the computer just do not boot anymore. I have no idea what he thought, he just installed Windows again. Sure is, he saw that I tried to partition the hard disk.
That was my very very first step into Linux, a big fail. :D Many many years later I did it again and also deleted Windows entirely but on purpose, the rest is history.
