Silly shit from yesterday. But I feel like a fool. The simple explanation is that I probably are one. :) For two hours I thought that there were a hardware failure with the screen on my eeepc. When I booted the background light had disappeared, so the screen were very dark and tiresome to look at. I had simply by accident turned the light off the day before without noticing it. Sloppy. But sitting there being frustrated for two hours for such a simple thing, without making the connection that maybe I should try fn+f6 key to see if something happens? But maybe the release from hardware failure agony is worth feeling like a fool sometime? :)

heh, I'd forgotten about this thread, nice resurrect !
Don't feel alone, I've turned my laptop trackpad off, with Fn+F7 before (mucking about - diving in and out of X must have hit it with Fn)
Then spent quite a long time worrying about it.
This morning, had to print something out with F-i-L's cannon printer, I had about 10 mins where I cursed it to high heaven, then I noticed the usb had become unplugged...

BTW [...I probably am a fool] ;)

Don't laugh - a few weeks ago, while I was still in China, my father panicked and called me, something was wrong with his email account. Every time he entered the password to check his mails (Chrome browser, auto-fill for username, but not so for password), it showed him the password was wrong, he should try again. "Did somebody hack my email account?"
"Nah, you are not that important, Dad".
He was 100% sure he typed the password right. I logged in on the web interface, everything worked. I told him to type the email address again, maybe there was a typo. He said he tries, but the @ doesn't show.
...
.....
...
I told him to press caps lock again. It worked afterwards.

To his excuse: the Acer laptop doesn't have an indicator for Caps Lock and Num Lock.

Screwed up my banking password a while ago. I were 800% sure I had typed the password correct. Went to the bank to help them fix it. They did, I tried to tell them that I had done no wrong. The guy thought probably, "that is what they all say". Afterwards back home the truth hits me. I had misspelled the password of course, very :8

Just lost most of my past writings -- and I don't know what other stuff -- due to a bad need to have more free space on my external HD. I usually backup my documents, videos, music, etc. on that HD, and I was 100% sure I had it all here on my lappy. Damn, years of writings gone with a click. It just can't get any worse.

I do remember doing backups on another external HD in the past, but it is back at home. Fingers crossed.

^ I am positive it will work. It is an external drive, so you haven't had too much IO after the failure. This suite has saved serious cock when my father wiped a bunch of invoices and photos from his laptop -- it will take a few hours, but it is worth it.

Some of it, yes. Got tons of shit recovered, most if makes no sense (corrupted files). I got some writings recovered though, so I am surely happier than last night. :-)
Thanks guys.

Yep, good ol' dd. Done it to /dev/sda and to an external hard drive twice forgetting to unplug it before dd-ing because I was in a hurry. Lost all my honeymoon pictures and my wife still periodically reminds me of this. Everything is backed up on to various Google Drives now. Borked many a system for various reasons trying out different shit or forgetting to do something and not following notes, docs or manuals. If I've learned anything from just about 21 years of Linux, it is to keep notes for referal later, read documentation and to keep a copy of Puppy Linux (I also have a copy of an old Parted Magic with Grub Doctor) on USB in case of momentary flashes of unbrillance.

Reminds me of the time when I only knew Windows and wanted to try out some distro. Clicked on "install". Ignored that "partitioning" and "formatting" is actually *not* the same thing. Cold sweat on reboot, when Windows was not in the LILO boot screen. Hated Linux for a while, but still continued using it (I got no other choice, lel) :D

^ It looks like that did some good for you haha!

I spent a good 30 minutes to an hour trying to figure out why my laptop could not connect to wifi. Whenever I tried to connect to a network through wpa_supplicant I would get an error message saying that "RF-kill was hard-blocked." I derped over all of the solutions the internet has, but then figured out that I accidentally flipped a little switch on the right side of my laptop that can turn on/off the wifi card. To add even more derp to the story, this is not even the first time I have done this...

fyi, rfkill can get softblocked through win(7) dual booting action. hardblock will always be a switch. but yeah, it took me looooong time to figure that out too.

Hey all,

I just wanted to apologize for my russian-roulette post and I understand why it was moved to /tmp/dumpster. I should of either put A LOT of disclaimers before the code telling users to not run it, or have just not posted it at all. The latter was probably a better option, as it did not belong in the user scripts thread.

Have a good day.
