IRC Info - UPDATED 2021

Unread post by Titan » Wed Jun 25, 2014 9:35 pm

Updated Sunday 20th June 2021

As you may have read or heard recently there was some big drama with Freenode
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/freenode-irc-has-been-taken-over-by-the-crown-prince-of-korea/

Like other communities (Arch, Gentoo, Ubuntu), i've setup a new channel on Libera Chat
https://libera.chat/about

I have registered the channel #linuxbbq and hope to have all the freenode users move over soon.

To connect to Libera Chat, see their instructions:
https://libera.chat/guides/connect

Weechat users can configure the program for Libera Chat by following this guide:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/WeeChat#Configuration

I dont think it nessecary to post new / updated rules here, everyone remaining knows not to be an asshole.
Any dumb-fuckery from newcomers will be met with a swift kick up the arse *eye-roll*

Happy Grilling :)

As this topic is locked only special snowflakes can reply. If you have any question please send me a PM on the forum or join #linuxbbq on Libera Chat

Old Stuff
Updated September 2017

[ Updates ]
* Webchat (browser based IRC) from https://webchat.freenode.net/ is now UN-blocked.
* It was previously blocked to prevent trolls, but I have been told some prefer to use webchat if they are on an internet kiosk or don't have a registered Nick for the Freenode network.
* If you access IRC on a machine you own, I recommend getting yourself a registered Nick here : https://freenode.net/kb/answer/registration so that nobody can pretend to be you.

[ General ]
* Recommended clients = Weechat (Gnu/Linux), AndChat (Android), Webchat https://webchat.freenode.net/
* Network = chat.freenode.net
* Channel name = #linuxbbq
* Ports (plain text) = 6665-6667 and 8000-8002
* Ports (SSL) = 6697, 7000 and 7070
* More details = https://freenode.net/kb/answer/chat

[ Rules ]
Rule 1.
No IRC bots of any kind.

Rule 2.
Do not attempt to impersonate another member of the LinuxBBQ forums by using their IRC Nick or forum name.

Rule 3.
No pointless flaming.
Example : The wrong way
[asshole]
"I hate systemd and that evil german (lennart) is trying to take over the whole Linux desktop"

Example : The right way
[Person A] "So, I've been tracking development of systemd and it has some new features you mite be interested in. link:example.com/systemd-updates
[Person B] "Im not comfortable with the caching of DNS queries, but this idea of using containers would be quite useful in enterprise/critical environments.

Rule 4.
Be excellent to each other!
There are so many people here who work incredibly hard to provide us with the releases, configs, wiki articles and help. Now, nobody is perfect (myself included) but just try to be a nice person :)

The IRC is there for questions about Linuxbbq and general chat including things that don't belong on the forums e.g "Dammit, the dog shit on the carpet again!" and "Stupid gcc 7 is is bloating my ISO images" :(
* Be fat, be as fat as you fucking please, just don't sit next to me on an aeroplane.
* "The sun never sets on the British Empire...." "Yeah, well, the sun never sets on my asshole!!"
* I am an "old skool" administrator who has been managing UNIX and Linux systems since the early 80s <-- big fkin lol
