Because .3 is the LTS version of the towo kernel :D

Hmmm, should we try slh again? Though, the fucker didn't even boot for me last time, IIRC.

towo.3 is here: same issue. I'll just keep using the reliable 3.14-6.towo-siduction-686-pae.

Manu, can you try following:

- let it boot into the black screen.
- wait a few seconds - the screen stays black and the hard rive indicator flashes
- enter 'root' and your password when it stops flashing
- enter 'pm-suspend' and let it fall asleep (provided you have pm-utils installed)
- wake it up again
- ecco: the screen is back.

Can you reproduce this behaviour?

Secondly: add "acpi=off" to the kernel boot line. The KMS will work, but startx won't. Is it the same on your PC too?

Did the first thing, but screen didn't came back.
I tried adding acpi=off to the kernel boot line, startx worked fine. But it may be due to the fact that I did a reboot instead of a poweroff, and sometimes the reboot with 3.15-0.towo.X just works.

Thank you - this is the last boot that worked, that is why I asked for /var/log/Xorg.*.log ;) Do you have them? Sorry to be a PITA but it makes a difference if we see the past failed boots :)

^ I only have Xorg.0.log. And that snippet comes from a Xorg.0.log right after coming back to tty1 from the black screen. I'll see what I can do.

[thanks for the help, of course]

Ah damned :) I thought we can maybe track back some failed boots... well, for the meanwhile - you got a working kernel. Does the 3.14-6.towo always work (so far)?

From what I researched the problem is the KMS, and it seems like there is no real fix for it except turning off ACPI or waking the fucker up from suspend. I do the second recently, just because I am fed up of praying at every reboot/poweron.

Oh yes 3.14-6.towo always works. It's the most reliable on this old laptop since 3.12-8.towo.
