[RESOLVED] removal of xserver-xorg-video-* packages

Unread post by machinebacon » Thu May 07, 2015 4:30 am

Be careful and delay the upgrade (May 7): today's upgrade of xserver-xorg-core will force some package to follow the version jump, and if they are not yet updated, they will be removed:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-video-modesetting

I only have the intel video driver installed, but I suppose other drivers would get removed too. So, skip this one by all means.

^ It happened to me with Arch a while ago. Just wait for xserver-xorg-video-intel (or whatever got deleted) to be back on track with sid and you'll be fine.

Thanks, for the tip, have learned from previous experiences that when apt want to remove x-stuff I better be cautious. ;)

Little update: the affected packages (as of May 8, 12:40AM Beijing Time) are

Code: Select all

xserver-xorg-video-all
xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-cirrus
xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-neomagic
xserver-xorg-video-savage
xserver-xorg-vide-siliconmotion
which practically means: if you do NOT have xserver-xorg-all installed, and also NOT one of the mentioned drivers in use, you can proceed the upgrade. So, users of nouveau are seemingly not affected. However, we do still recommend to skip the dist-upgrade.

Heh. I should have read this before I upgraded this morning! Anywho, I have a little flicker when I try to move windows in Xorg. Other than that I seem to be fine. Anxiously waiting for the T410 keyboard to start smoking; so far the reaction has been pretty disappointing.

Thanks Doc, so we have to wait a few days, maximum. ;)

downgrading will be a bit tough, so just wait and pray. Your tty will definitely work, no matter what, so dist-upgrades you can try even if X is dead. Patience.

This is going to sound freaky, but when I logged-out/back-in I didn't have near the same problem with flickering. It still does it when I open a new window (perhaps something with the refresh rate?) but moving my mouse doesn't induce the same lightshow that it did before. Strange.

Just dist-upgraded. Everything works fine.

(also, XFCE 4.12 is here, so I'm happy)
