^ agree, there's something in combo with libpam, xserver and probably udev, and I would not recommend to upgrade for a few days.

It must be connected with our friend (not!) systemd since I have been dist-upgrading my antiX sysvinit with nosystemd debs without any issues (I have rebooted).

I think the issue is indeed with systemd and probably its dependencies.

Thank you for the fix MB, downgraded both xserver-xorg and xserver-xorg-core on my debian box and everything is working perfectly :)
