I am on Mate right now. As I said, the theme will solve it. ;) No need to panic. I have zero issues and I tested also Brasero. Though, of course I do not touch bloat like Synaptic. :D

Just made a rdepends check on mate packages, they do not depend on gtk3. MATE to the rescue :)

Similar problems (with brasero : core dump) and installation of clearlooks-phenix-theme
did the trick.
